Threadworms - Ovex help.

We discovered threadworms on my son on Sunday evening after he woke crying and complaining of a sore bottom. I saw the little critter wriggling around and so we got treatment, Ovex, the next day. The following two night there have been tears and we have washed the worms away late at night, last night there were loads.

I have been blitzing the house and washing the sheets each morning.

Today he did a poo and there were, no exaggeration, about 40 of them wriggling in just one poo! Does this mean the treatment is working or not working? I am not sure if it is supposed to kill them or expell them? Also I have had a bad upset stomach and stomach cramps today has anyone else experienced this after Ovex or is it a coincidence this long after taking the treatment.

Our doctor said there is a bit of an epidemic at the moment. Wonderful!

Hi

We went through the same thing with my four year old a few months ago. It took about 3 days after she took the ovex for all the worms to go. I treated the whole family and became a woman obsessed. I changed sheets every day, bathed the kids twice a day and each time my four yr old pooed. I even threw out all the playdoh etc as the eggs could be on there

I'm sure you've read loads of websites but make sure you take another ovex two weeks after the first dose was taken.

I also experienced the cramps but no one else did.

Hope it all finishes soon. If worms don't seem to be lessening by tomorrow I would go doctors

My dd had worms a few weeks ago. Took ovex and did family too although noone else had any. Sheets etc done...... She was really poorly with cramps after 24 hours and took 4-5 days till poo was clear of the worms. I gave a Second tablet after 10 days just to make sure.

Te pharmacist actually said something that made me think....... We worm cats/dogs every six months but not our children?!?!

Thank you for your replies. I am too that woman possessed, my washing machine hasnt seen so much action and I think my kids think I have gone mad! I will only let them take their clothes off in the bathroom to contain the eggs a bit! Bathing twice a day too!

Bonkerz - that Pharmasist had a v good point!!

My doctor said re do treatment after three weeks not two but I am worried this will allow time for worms to lay eggs again?

Oh dear, I have just laughed out loud at the memories.... I made the kids take their clothes off only in bathroom too and then clothes straight into a bath of very hot water.... I also made my husband do the same even though he didn't get them !!!

I had my mum and mother in law sung their washing machines all day too !!!

Hmmm not sure about three weeks. All websites and I think ovex packet says two weeks.

Jules2011 · 29/08/2012 21:08

Ooh no the hot water is a good idea!! I am going to stick to the two weeks!

The good thing is I may loose a few 'holiday' lbs if the medicine upsets me again Wink

How's it all going ??

Jules2011 · 01/09/2012 08:46

Hello - It's going well thanks, after the mass worm evacuation, we had a day where we saw a couple on his bottom, but no more crying at night. Only dead ones coming out now so I think we are there on that front.

Still keeping bare bottoms contained in the bathroom and vacuuming and wiping everywhere though.

I am going to speak to our school and see if they can do an awareness campaign so we can cut the chances of this happening again and I have bought some grapefruit seed extract oil to pop in the boys drinks now and then.

I just need some good hand cream now! Grin

Ahh that's good to hear. Yes I told the nursery. They assured me they threw out all play Doh, sand etc and put a big notice for all parents to check. I guess the problem are those parents that don't inform the nurseries etc so it will keep spreading as its so contagious.

I made mine eat garlic lol, then started on the aptimel.

Well done you ! Bet you need a holiday !

Jules2011 · 01/09/2012 16:58

Annoying thing is that we just got back from holiday - someone always ends up with something, we should just stay home!

Garlic bread is cooking Smile

I just hope that's it now - not looking forward to the second dose though Sad

My eldest got chicken pox whilst we were on holiday.... Yep, always something !

Remember the weight loss !

sneezecakesmum · 01/09/2012 20:26

Its better to treat the whole family, and you can buy ovex over the counter at a chemist.

The life cycle of the worms is around 3 weeks I think so the second dose should kill off all the newly hatching things (yuk)

Ovex gives you tummy ache btw as I took some when I found our dog had sat on the sky remote and there was poo on it!!! overreaction really as it was so gross.

Jules2011 · 06/09/2012 11:49

The school were grateful I told them today. Apparently nits are everywhere too at the moment so the kids are being sprayed with tea tree oil now lol.

Next dose on Monday and fingers crossed that will be us clear for a while.

I definitely need my second dose of Ovex as just found an Easter egg in the cupboard Wink

Jules, I automatically give Ovex to everyone (and change sheets, quick hoover) in the school holidays. Then repeat two weeks later. Not seen any worms (though a friend sharing holiday with us had them last summer) or suspected any, but as the pharmacist said....Smile

This way, we all get wormed 3x a year - sometimes more, if I suspect an itch!

If you are going to be away from home for two weeks or more, its a great opportunity to worm everyone the day you leave - after stripping sheets - as eggs likely to die by the time you get back, meaning far less cleaning

Jules2011 · 06/09/2012 20:20

That's a good idea for the kids - but maybe not for me as that Ovex doesn't agree with me!

Thank you - less housework the better!
