boosting childs immune system following illness

both DD (5.5) and DS (2.5) are generally well, aside from a long run of conjunctivitis due to immature tear ducts when DD was small, there have been very few trips to the docs, and not often any anti-biotics or meds (aside from when DD had swine flu, but that's another story!)

We generally eat fairly well, not a lot of sugary snacks and crisps etc, and usually have plenty of time outside, walks, bike rides etc.

Both DCs had chicken pox in May, and IMHO, haven't really been right since. On hols a few weeks ago DS got a non-specific viral infection which ended up with him admitted to hospital after febrile convulsion.

10 days ago both DCs were admitted to hospital with rotavirus, adenovirus and H0157 e.coli? DD certainly out the other side now, just without any energy, and DS (fingers crossed, touch wood etc etc) almost there too.

Currently feeling extremely fortunate that they've escaped the worst of what H0157 can do (especially after the tragic cases that have been reported recently :( )they seem to have got away with just the haemorraghic colitis without any of the kidney damage?

I am left wondering though what we can do (if anything) to try and boost their immune systems? cancelled swimming for the next month, and we'll try and have fairly quiet month at home, but DD back to school next week (assuming her stool tests come back negative) and DS back to nursery (ditto)? aside from this, and starting them both back on daily multi-vits - any suggestions please??

thanks everso :)

Children's probiotics - get the most expensive you can afford. Biocare is a well-recognised brand.
Try not to let them eat too much sugar or refined carbs.
Your poor babies!
Get a really good quality children's multivit too - there's such a difference.

I also say get good probiotics.

And get some for yourself as you must be run down after recent illness - worrying and tiring looking after little sick ones.

I have used Optibac in the past as they do a kids one but on the look out for something else as it has lactose in it and caused mayhem for my dairy-free kid.

Floradix vitamin syrup-easily absorbed, health food shop.

Not a great fan of blanket vitamins but your body sometimes needs support to get over a wacking virus & you want them well before the winter bugs start up.

Have you got/can you get a juicer? Lots of goodies in fresh juice!
