DD constantly complains of an itchy bottom - please help!

Hello all, my DD is 3-and-a-half years old. Recently, she has been complaining of an itchy bottom. I've looked at the area and cannot find any obvious causes, such as worms. I've taken to creaming the area again (Vaseline or Bepanthen - even a tiny smear of Anusol sometimes) but nothing relieves the itch.

Selfishly, it's driving DH and I crazy.

She starts nursery in 2 weeks and I don't want her to be known as the girl who keeps scratching her bottom and tugs at her knickers Blush

So, short of taking her to our GP (my DD hates going and will not like GP having a peek at her privates), what can we do?

TIA x

You'd be very lucky to see any worms if it is that, which to me it sounds like.

I would get some worming stuff, treat the whole family, disinfect toilet, boil wash bedding etc. and see if that helps.

PestoSandalissimos · 28/08/2012 17:47

Take her to your GP

It will be worms, you can't always see 'em coz they tend to come out at night.

He will prescribe you a worming treatment which all family members must take and repeat in 2 weeks' time.

Wash all bedding, towels and pj's on hot wash and make sure hands are washed frequently.

If you don't want to visit the GP ask for OVEX at your pharmacy. You'll need to buy enough to dose you all, twice

Thanks both, but I was wondering: dont worms make the bottom itch more at night? DDs seems worse in the day. She doesn't wake at night with an itchy bottom. Would that make a difference?

I'm thinking a trip to the GP is inevitable.

Yep, almost certainly worms. Try sudocrem on her bum at night while treating and make sure she's also got pants on under pjs. Cut her nails short to reduce likelihood of eggs getting stuck under them and transferred. Like the others have said, all bedding needs washing and do stuffed toys too if you can

cocolepew · 28/08/2012 17:58

Worms or maybe thrush?

MolatovBomb · 28/08/2012 18:27

Thrush is a possibility ... Sometimes her vagina (outer lips) gets red. It quickly disappears when I use one ofthe creams I mentioned. Come to think of it, there has been a white substance around her vagina at times. I thought that this was remnants of Bepanthen or Sudocrem. Would thrush make her bottom/anus itch?

Def worms

Good luck

Lougle · 28/08/2012 18:45

It's worms. They're evil. DD2 gets them very frequently because she sucks her hand. If her vagina is red, it's irritation from the slime the worms excrete.

Oh sweet Jesus!

slartybartfast · 28/08/2012 19:03

sorry, rather worms can cause thrush.

slartybartfast · 28/08/2012 19:03

and canestan for vagina

susiedaisy · 28/08/2012 19:05

I agree worms or thrush, probably worms, an itchy bottom is a classic sign, check her bedding sometimes tiny ones can be found on the sheets, a trip to the gp is a must.

GnocchiNineDoors · 28/08/2012 19:08

It may well be worms. However, fizzy drinks can also cause an itchy bottom so if she has recently started drinking fizzy pops, this may explain it.

mirry2 · 28/08/2012 19:08

Worms. If you get a torch and look at night you can sometimes them around her anus.

NellyJob · 28/08/2012 19:10

the GP will prescribe the same stuff that you can just buy over the counter.

mirry2 · 28/08/2012 19:11

sorry I eant to type 'sometimes see them..'

NellyJob · 28/08/2012 19:11

don't worry,it's kind of normal, like headlice, just have to treat the whole family and get a bit anal (hahahaha sorry) about washing sheets and towels.

MolatovBomb · 29/08/2012 18:55

Hi all, an update: I took DD to see our Dr today and after an examination (bad times!), he thinks she has thrush. She's been prescribed antifungal cream which has to be applied topically 2-3 times a day for 2 weeks. If the itching returns, I'll need to take her back.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply xx
