Headlice...dear Lord

Was drying DD's hair yesterday when I thought I spied a bug, freaked out slightly then looked again and nothing. Went through her hair to see if there was any sign of nits but nothing. However thought of it again this morning and, dear god, there was a tiny bug on her pillow. Am I to assume this is Headlice? We have gone three years without experiencing them so it is new to me.

Aaaah, feel ill at the idea though I know most if not all mums go through this.

Any recommendations on best treatment?

Any very very tiny White dots stuck to the hair, usually behind the ears and back of the neck? Blush

MrsShrek3 · 28/08/2012 08:59

And best treatment IMHO nitty gritty comb. Can be had free on prescription as it's pricey. You use any old conditioner instead of chemicals and the comb does the bug busting Smile

I find nitty gritty comb rubbish (£10 down the drain)
You need hedrin once, and the comb that comes free with full marks lotion
All the best x

branston is advertising her lice removal service lol

MangawhaiHeads · 28/08/2012 19:38

I would pay for it too!! Did I say 'eugh' already!

I love my nitty gritty.

Hedrin didn't do much for us apart from make my eyes water. I find frizz ease better than conditioner as it is easier to see what you are doing. Section hair and be methodical. Put on favourite DVD so child sits still for as long as need be (my DD has waist length hair so it's a while) and think of a large glass when you are done.

BAd luck, nits are vile. Worms are worse, but keep your fingers crossed you'll be spared those for a while.

Best of British at getting rid of the blighters.

just a normal lice comb and loads of conditioner and keep at it......
the tea tree spray stuff is good, i have seen it in savers.
also, after washing, soak the hair in wine vinegar and then use a hairdryer.
I was so grossed out the first time I found one, but after while, you get quite blase....

It is always a pain when head lice are about. I have been using Linicin for years always works well. You can treat and prevent. You can check out all the info here - www.linicin-headlice.co.uk/

Would highly recommend.

We've done years of tackling headlice on and off. Both DDs have really thick, long hair so treating with the oils means hours of trying to wash the hair clean again and uses ridiculous amounts of shampoo.

The only effective method we have ever found is combing through with conditioner every three days for three weeks. You have to do it properly and methodically every time. This method removes them reliably and the short intervals in between prevent newly hatched critters getting mature enough to lay new eggs.

The lotions and potions do work sometimes but there have been plenty of occasions where some have been left behind and we've had a new crop a few weeks later.

I learned the hard way. It doesn't matter what you put on to treat them. Keeping combing every three days is the only way to be sure you've missed none.

Our school nurse now only recommends thorough combing and conditioning.

I think there should be an annual headlice day where every parent is asked to comb and condition all their children on the same day and continue if they find any. I know there would be parents who didn't bother but maybe a coordinated attack would cut numbers enough to be worth it.

Elderflowergranita · 01/09/2012 22:38

I find 'Full Marks' and the nitty gritty comb to be a good combo.

Then, as others have said condition and comb through every few days.

They're a complete pain in the butt! DD has waist-length hair so it takes us an age to do comb throughs.

MrsShrek3 · 02/09/2012 22:22

Timandra, I'm going to take your idea and write it on the calendar...comb every three days for three weeks. Thats all three children (the magic of 3?Grin )
Thank you Smile

Goldmandra · 02/09/2012 22:31

For once I'm glad that I only have two children MrsShrek Grin

Enjoy!

This thread has reminded me that I've not done any checking since we came back from holiday. Back to school this week and back to the once a week comb through.

PissyDust · 02/09/2012 22:43

We all have hedrin on this evening and will do it again same time next week, with conditioner & nitty gritty comb In between this.

Back to school this week so I do the conditioner and comb thing once a week on all 3 DD's.

Thank god my eldest two enjoy come dine with me so I only have to endure cbeebies for a little part of my nit check routine!

Northernlurkerisonholiday · 02/09/2012 22:43

I like the nitty gritty. Combined with hedrin it's effective. The stuff irritates my eyes though too.
