DS2 (20mos) has been a bit snotty and clingy last few days and asked for "med" (Calpol) last few evenings which he doesn't usually do. Otherwise he's been pretty perky.

This morning when DP took off DS's overnight nappy his penis and testicles were quite swollen, swelling seemed to be in his groin too. He complained it was "sore" when wiped.

DP took him to GP this afternoon by which time the swelling had gone down quite a lot although DP had taken a photo when it was bad this morning.
GP checked him over and said it doesn't seem to be anything obvious and his obs (temp, chest etc are all fine) and perhaps it was a skin infection which is now clearing (skin doesn't look at all red).

Am reassured that GP isn't concerned, but wonder what could cause this swelling in children.
Can anyone shed any light without me resorting to google and convincing myself DS2 has a dreadful disease.

TIA

There are glands in the groin area, we tend to think only of glands in the neck which we see swollen when sore throats or colds, I only know of them because I had an infection after an operation and my glands in my groin and pelvis swelled up, was really weird and didn't have a clue about them before and I obviously was a bit panicked when it happened - could it be that he was fighting an infection and those glands were swollen?? I really have no idea, but would recommend stepping away from google Smile and what him closely in case you need to go back to GP or OOH
Hope weekend goes ok and he's on the mend x

Thanks v much for your reply incy

Your explanation makes a lot of sense, his groins (is it plural when it's both sides? Confused) were quite swollen so maybe that would account for the rest of the swelling. He has been off colour with cough and cold symptoms so probably is fighting off something.
He complained that he was 'sore' when washing his willy in bath tonight but was easily distracted.
Will keep a close eye over the w/e.

Thanks again Smile

This tends to happen at this time of year (in tots) when they have been bitten on the ankles by insects, scratched and got a slight infection. Do not worry unless he spikes a fever in which case you need to consider antibiotics.
