High Temp in 10yr old DESPITE Pain Pills ??

My soon to be 10yr old DD has what we are presuming is a virus, took ill very suddenly last night, though she was off colour yesterday & complaining of aching ankles - not so unusual for her & she's on the road to a Hypermobility diagnosis, which would explain that.

However despite being a real little toughy, she was in a hell of a state last night :( - but no obvious symptoms such as sickness etc - just exhausted, feverish & she can't stomach food - stomach hurts, but that could be glands or its affecting her IBS

She had a temperature of 38.9 & rising rapidly last night, felt like she was burning up to the touch, & headache so have given her intermittent Ibruprofen & Paracetamol which SHOULD control the temperature as well as help with discomfort - but she was still burning up through the night & still today, so I've been having to ice flannel her too -

she's not delirious, but obviously unwell & even though I know the temperature is the bodies natural defence system if its 39 WITH painkillers I'm wondering what it would be without & if I should be worrying more & getting her seen medically ??

Can anyone offer advice please ??

TIA :)

Have you taken her to a doctor? I hope she's getting better.

Thanks Totally

I did ring them earlier but I couldn't get her an appointment, they did say to bring her in at the end of surgery if there was no improvement, but to be honest she's not really well enough to walk round there :(

also her temperature thankfully seems to be dropping, still a bit high even with pain drugs, but much better than earlier, she's drinking loads, though still not really eating, she did manage a small handful o almonds, so heading in the right direction at least, though still very feverish, but not as bad as last night/earlier, so hopefully she's through the worst, if not I'll be back onto the doctors tomorrow - if it is a virus, which seems most likely, its a weird one

If she still has a high temperature, e.g. 39 or more, with calprofen and calpol I would take her to a doctor as it may be a bacterial infection.

Hi, Thanks -

I did take her to see a GP, who thankfully was very thorough in checking her over, chest, stomach, urine sample & checked a bite wound I was very mildly concerned about - it seemed to have healed very well, but I know they can be a risk , so hence the mild worry - all got the all clear, so it was diagnosed as a "nasty virus", which she reckoned could be 7 days to clear :( - DD has improved slightly, but is still in bit of a state, weak, stomach pain (probably glands or aggravating diagnosed IBS) & headaches - she has managed to eat a tiny bit & still has a temperature, tthough thankfully its now lower with pain drugs & 39 without - so still ongoing, but I suppose at least heading in the right direction - poor mites fed up as we've had to cancel camping this weekend as a result :(

Hopefully she gets better soon.

I would keep a very close eye on her and take her back to GP or OOH or A&E if anything does not feel right rather than thinking that it is okay because GP said it may take 7 days. TBH I don't understand how a GP can say that unless they know exactly which virus she has (which would have involved taking a bloodtest).

I would be particularly concerned if high fever persists for much longer and especially if the fever persists round the clock (so doesn't disappear during the morning to start coming back towards the end of the afternoon) and/or doesn't go away with maximum doses of calpol and calprofen. I would also look for breathing (i.e. whether it seems laboured, shallow, noisy, fast etc.), ensuring she gets enough fluids (rehydration drink like dioralyte if in doubt) and any meningitis signs.

I don't want to scare you though, I just have had some very bad experiences with GPs missing life threatening illness. I am not saying that that is the case with your DD, but I am wary of your GPs 7 day diagnosis.

Thanks dikkertjedap - TBH I've had the same sort of experience with GPs in the past myself, twice - DD wouldn't be alive now if I'd listened, so I know too well they can get it wrong - 5 of them missed Pneumonia.

After I posteed that, things did take a turn for the worse & we ended up down A&E on the say so of the out of hours Doctor who thought it might be Appendicitis , though thankfully we are finally now back home - she was yelping with the pain her stomach when she sneezed & shes normally a real little toughy, seen her deal with some awful stuff & hold it together :( - so I was really unsure myself too - even the A&E Doctors couldn't decide -

They said she wasn't typical symptoms, but she was obviously in a lot of pain & Appendicitis isn't always typical & her symptoms were close enough - after a discussion they ended up putting a cannula in her for surgery & blood tests -

The surgeon then came down & thoroughly examined her again - he decided that by the feel of her stomach if it is appendix its grumbling & not ready to burst, so not an emergency, so can wait for blood results tomorrow - but he also said he thinks it is actually a virus as she's inflammation in her ears & all her glands are up & that the severe stomach pain is a combination of painful stomach glands & the virus hitting her stomach & causing a bit of inflammation there too, & lack of food -

so no surgery - phew!! - also her temperature came down whilst we were there - it was 38.4 on arriving with pain drugs & down to 36 when checked later -

feel like I've been on a damned roller coaster tonight, but at least feel reassured she isn't in any immediate danger & hopefully the surgeon is right & she's on the mend soom
