Advice please - DD's tooth is turning grey!

Hi, hoping someone can help. DD (aged 2.5) fell over about a year ago and chipped her front tooth. I took her to the dentist and they said there was a risk that the tooth might be dead and not only that, but the adult tooth behind it may also be dead.

Nothing much happened after that but a few days ago I noticed it had a greyish tinge to it. I dismissed it as a trick of the light but today it seems to have got worse and has definitely turned grey. Obviously am going to ring the dentist in the morning but just wondered if anyone had any advice in the meantime. Can't understand why it's suddenly gone grey and am worried she's going to lose the tooth. Any dentists out there?

Thanks...

It sounds like the nerve may have died so there is a increased risk of infection in the gum and it may need to be removed. Really, though, you have to wait for the dentist to tell you. My mum had te same and now has a crown, although you wouldn't know by looking.

A dentist will probably just leave it alone and only remove it if she gets any pain or swelling. It could well be fine until it falls out naturally :)

(have seen this scenario at work several times)

Adult teeth are treated differently to baby teeth in this scenario :)

Happypiglet · 22/08/2012 22:28

My DS2 knocked his front baby tooth when he was about 4. It went grey gradually. As it was already slightly wobbly dentist left it to fall out naturally. She said the adult tooth underneath was unlikely to be damaged unless the knock pushed the baby tooth upwards, rather than backwards IYSWIM.
She did say that if it didn't fall out itself she would remove it to reduce risk of infection and abcesses.

are you sure that this has only just happened? it's quite common for teeth to 'bruise' after a bump, but it's normally a couple of weeks after.
anyway, it happened to my dd, dentist told us tooth had died etc and to look out for pain, swelling etc but actually after a while it faded and the colour went pretty much back to normal.

mammmamia · 22/08/2012 22:38

Thanks so much for all the quick responses. That's fairly reassuring.

Aitch - yes, I'm quite sure the grey has only just appeared even though the knock was over a year ago. Strange, I know. Perhaps she has knocked it again at nursery and that's what's made it turn grey this time.
Will post back when I've been to the dentist tomorrow - thanks again.

well fingers crossed it's actually a more recent thing, as there's a good chance it will fade again. i posted about dd's tooth at the time and a fair few people said their kids' teeth had got better. never quite right, but only a parent could tell, iykwim?

This happened to me but the tooth didn't fall out - my adult tooth grew in behind it and it needed to be removed and I had to have braces for years. It probably will fall out on it's own but keep an eye on it when other teeth start to wobble

mammmamia · 23/08/2012 00:25

Already resigned to the fact that the DCs will have to have braces for years Sad both have seriously wonky teeth not inherited from me

It can a while for the tooth to grey up after a trauma. Happened to both my dds. They both knocked a front tooth & it went grey. The good news is, that they also lost the grey hue & in both cases after a period of time the tooth looked normal again.

marriednotdead · 23/08/2012 04:59

This happened to my DS, he slipped over in the bath when he was about 18 months old. His tooth went grey almost immediately but it stayed in until it's natural time to fall out, and his adult tooth was fine.

Same thing happened to my DD, hers took months after she banged it to turn grey and then it chipped! Dentist wouldn't do anything unless it caused pain, which it didn't.. It fell out by itself when she was 5 and the tooth underneath was perfect.

mammmamia · 26/08/2012 22:49

Thanks everyone. Sorry for delay in reporting back. Took her to dentist, said pretty much exactly what fanjo said! She has no pain or swelling so think will just need to keep an eye on it and let it be for now.
She was a nightmare at the dentist though. Prepped her beforehand but the second they called her name she clamped her hand over her mouth and started screaming. Confused

Thanks again for all the replies.
