Er my 5 yr old DS seems to have stopped growing

Same size feet as last September

Not moved on the growth chart on his wall since then either, in 3-4 year olds clothes

Dd (2) is only a inch or so smaller

Just wanted to canvas opinions in case this is normal before I take him to the GP! Maybe he's just due a really big growth spurt?

Thanks

Should say neither I or his dad are small

I'm 5"6, Dad is 5"10

our DS's (5yo) feet haven't grown in a year either! We were a bit perplexed, but others in class apparently same. Think he must be a bit taller, but has only recently had that growth spurt. Am sure your DS is fine :)

combinearvester · 21/08/2012 17:53

I have a similar situation with a 2 year old catching up to a 4 and a half year old.

Older child is in the same clothes as last summer, feet have grown one size though. Younger child is in 3-4 clothes and feet have grown 3 sizes in 6 months.

I think they grow rapidly as toddlers and then things slow down for a bit, we are so used to them growing loads that it looks a bit odd when they don't.

Where is he on the red book charts (they go up to 5 don't they?)?

Pantone363 · 21/08/2012 17:55

When they did height and weight checks at school he was on the 20% percentile. Dropped from the 60% at 4.

DD has the same size feet as him!

What size are his feet?

greenhill · 21/08/2012 17:59

My 5 yo DD had the same size shoes for 18 months and is only now starting to gain some height, she's age 7-8 in clothes though. Neither me or DH are particularly tall either.

greenhill · 21/08/2012 18:02

She is in size 11's and her 2 yo old brother is 6.5 shoes and age 4-5 clothes.

DorisIsWaiting · 21/08/2012 18:05

Red book go on after 5 (it's just a different page).

We are having similar problems with dd2 (although she does have a significant long standing health condition which impacts).

If he is falling down the centiles which he probably will be, it may well be worth checking in with your GP, with a watch and wait plan if you rgp is already aware and in 2-3 months nothing has changed they are at least in the picture.

What's his appetite like? Is he skinny as a rake or does he look like he's 'due a grow' ?

DD was the smallest girl in the school last year (r) and has ever y chance of being one of the smallest again this year. dd3 is 3 and already they swap clothes and shoes are pretty much interchangable.

EdithWeston · 21/08/2012 18:06

I'd heard that feet not growing at all for this length of time is an indicator that something could be amiss, so I'd want to discuss with GP including whether it is time for a referral to a general paediatrician or a paediatric endocrinologist.

Even if GP has good reason to say 'not yet' to a referral, it does put when you first raised concerns into his notes.

Pantone363 · 21/08/2012 18:09

His feet are an 8 so are DDs and she's 2!

He is pure muscle Grin. I know it sounds stupid but he has a visible six pack, biceps, calf muscles. But not in a skinny way, they are pronounced muscles! Not an ounce of fat on him.

curmit · 21/08/2012 18:16

My DS is size 10 - but as I said has been that size for what seems like over a year. He is not the smallest in his class, but some of his other classmates are in size 12! I think it's ok for there to be a difference between them at this age - am sure all grow at different rates and certainly they seem to slow down a bit age 5.....

DorisIsWaiting · 21/08/2012 18:16

If he's pure muscle and no fat could you try increasing the amout of fat in his diet ? If he is muscle is his body using more calories than you are getting in?

DD is supposed to have a high fat diet (she doesn't but that's becuase she choses not to eat!)

DorisIsWaiting · 21/08/2012 18:17

DD2(5) is an 8.5 and dd3 (3) is and 8.

Pantone363 · 21/08/2012 18:21

So for a 5 year old boy his feet are comparatively small aren't they?

At least he doesn't need new uniform!

OP posts:
curmit · 21/08/2012 18:27

I guess, but he might just be a smaller kid? My DH is 5ft6" (he says 5ft 7" ;) ) and yet ALL the men in his family are way over 6ft. edith has now made me paro about DS's feet!

amck5700 · 21/08/2012 18:28

Did they not mention something when he fell down the percentiles? I thought the whole point of those was so that they could more easily monitor growth patterns, doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong, but I thought a movement across a couple of centiles triggered some further monitoring. Kids do grow in fits and starts, but generally you would expect some movement in the summer due to the extra vit D - does he get outside enough without really high factor sun cream?

Pantone363 · 21/08/2012 18:30

We don't use sun cream at all unless we are abroad. We go on holiday in march, they built up a base and then get darker all year. All 3 are White blonde and black as the ace of spades!

amck5700 · 21/08/2012 18:30

my boys both took an adult size 1 at age 5, but then their first shoes were a 6 and half at 12 months old. You can't go by averages at that age as they all grow at different rates.

Pantone363 · 21/08/2012 18:31

They didn't mention anything. It just said on the letter where he would fall for his height and weight, they dont have access to our red books

OP posts:
curmit · 21/08/2012 18:35

just googled quickly and noticed on another forum a 7 year old who had size 10 feet, and a 6 year old who was in 8.5, but went up to a size 10 over the summer holiday - I think don't worry about it all, but go to your GP to put your mind at rest. :)

amck5700 · 21/08/2012 18:37

Ahh, well, I wouldn't panic, but I would definitely raise it with the doctor or health visitor - was this measurement done recently? Can you measure him yourself and plot it on the chart? I still measure my boys (now 12 and 11) every year on their birthday and plot it on the chart, not that I am worried about anything, I just like to see them follow the line. It could be that they just haven't measured him properly or the person who measured him the year before didn't.

BeaWheesht · 21/08/2012 22:29

ds had had size 12 feet since he was 3 he is now 5y7m. I wouldnt be worry if hes otherwise well.

Claire2009 · 21/08/2012 22:45

Similar problem here!
Dd is a very slow grower, just out of size 10 shoes, still in some 4-5 clothes! She'll be 7 in Feb! She is 3 stone & 118cms

Ds is 5, size 13 feet, 3.5stone and 122cms!

Tgger · 25/08/2012 22:16

Is he healthy and happy- no obvious problems? If so, I wouldn't worry, if not then maybe a visit to GP to quell anxieties. They are all different. DS is like the 5 year old pp- size 12.5 feet, 122cm and about 3.5 stone- mind you he's nearly 6 now. DD is nearly 4 and 101 cm, size 8.5 feet and about 15 kilos- can't remember how many stone, just remember she was ok for next car seat but we decided not to bother yet!- so pretty average/just above average. However up until 6 months ago DD was diddy- below average in height and weight and DH certainly had concerns- then she spurted! two sizes in feet and about 5/10 cm in height!
