Can my drs really do our 6 week check this late?

We were due for our check this afternoon, however, I got a call this morning to change our appointment. It seems my GP has gone off sick, and the receptionist has postponed our check for another few weeks. Dd will be nearly 10 weeks by then. The only reason I agreed to it this morning was because I'd had 3 hour sleep Hmm

Is it really ok to leave it that long?

I had things I needed to discuss with a GP. So now I'm wondering if I can insist that they fit us in sooner rather than later.

I was told it needed to be done between 6-8 weeks. But according to the receptionist, it can be done up to 12 weeks. Was she pulling my leg or is this true?

I'd say it's fine. But if you have concerns then just make a routine appointment with any GP in your practice ...

To be honest I wouldn't be happy with that as the immunisation schedule is quite strict and the first set are supposed to be at 8 weeks and the second set at 12. There can be knock on effects if you don't stick to the schedule. I think I would insist that you and your baby are seen no later than 8 weeks.

DS had his that late due to changing doctors at the time, it all got a bit chaotic. He's had all his immunisations since with no problems.

McPhee · 17/08/2012 00:02

Me and DP have had a chat about it tonight, and as I said, I only agreed under a haze of tiredness. I'll call back in the morning and insist we're seen sooner.

How do the immunisations work. Do I get a letter or do I have to make those appointments myself?

If there are no concerns then waiting to 12 weeks wouldnt bother me. Where I am the appointment for the immunisations arrives in the post.

I wouldn't be happy. I know someone who had a serious issue picked up at the checkup and was scheduled for immediate surgery. Thank God it hadn't been delayed.

See I have concerns about her abdomen. One a few of my scans, it was noted that Dd had an enlarged abdomen. Well it's not right, it's almost as though her insides lull about from one side to the other? I mentioned it to my HV and she said it was just wind. But I just know it shouldn't be like that. Mothers instinct and all that. My sister, who thinks she some kind of child guru (that's another thread all together), seems to think Dd has a problem with her stomach wall not being knitted together

At our GP's surgery they do a combined health check for mum and baby at 8 weeks and then do the first lot of immunisations then too. I then booked in for the 12 week immunisations straight after the 8 week ones and then the third set at 16 weeks (there is a table in the back of your baby's red book with the immunisation schedule). The timings of the immunisations are set for optimum effectiveness so it's best to stick as closely as you can to the suggested ages.

If you are worried about your baby's abdomen (or anything else) you should definitely go to see the doctor sooner rather than later (both for your peace of mind as well as baby's health). Don't let the receptionist put you off, there must be another doctor you can see. Good luck :)

If you are worried about her abdomen then you can phone and book her a GP appointment, you don't need to wait for the '6 week check'.

debka · 17/08/2012 22:00

Agree with mellen. Just take her to the GP on Monday morning.

Re jabs, here they send you a letter telling you about your first appointment, then you book the next when you're there for your first appointment.

DS2 had his 6-8 week check at 11w 3days at the end of July. I wasn't particularly happy to wait but because a) my GP surgery insist on doing the check themselves (instead of the health clinic doctor), b) only have one GP (with paed specialism) doing the checks, c) that GP being on holiday and d) being told they will not see the baby before they are 8 weeks, we just had to wait. All in all a slightly ridiculous chain of events.

Imms are separate, I just made the appt for the 8 week set when convenient and he will have the next set on Tues ( a little late).

McPhee · 17/08/2012 22:14

I've made her an appointment for monday Smile

And funnily enough, a letter arrived this morning about her jabs. But it says we have to call and make our own appointment, so I'll do that monday when we're there.

Oh and if you have a concern, see the GP now, don't wait for the 'official' check.
