How long can tummy bugs last?

DD aged 2 has basically never been ill in her life so it sounds ridiculous but I am fretting now because I've never had to deal with ill child before!!

She has been saying her tummy hurts since Sunday night, no vomiting but diarrhoea for four days - it seems to go away but as soon as she eats anything it all comes out again. Is this normal for a tummy bug? I am making sure she has lots of drinks but is there anything else I can do?

This has co-incided with week 2 of potty training and my morning sickness peaking, so I am a bit stressed!!

countess not much wisdom from me - came on thread as am interested in answer 16 month old DD similar sounding bug since Sunday. Going away for weekend and now doubting she will be back to normal in time.

My only prior experience with a bug was when she was EBF which was in many ways easier. In the end I took her to GP as wasn't clearing up and was diagnosed as rotavirus (sp?) I think. Anyway that one took best part of 2 weeks to go away...

It must be very hard when combined with potty training and morning sickness..

Hope someone else comes along soon with a more optimistic prognosis for us both!

Thanks Liveinthepresent, hope your DD feels better soon too, it's grim isn't it?

I'm reassured to know they can last a while anyway. . .

I've just remembered she did have a mild sickness bug when she was a baby, only 1 day though, and I agree EBF is so much easier as you don't have to worry about what to feed them!

HelloSmile

I was told by doc when ds had tummy bug that it could last up up two weeks!

He also said to avoid dairy as much as possible as the bug can cause a temporary lactose intolerance. This seemed true in ds's case. Dioralyte also helped to keep him hydrated.

If it helps, it didn't last two weeks(thank goodness) Hope it's over soon.

Ds was very poorly for a week but the runny poo lasted about 2 weeks took him to dr and they said that it takes them longer to get over poopy bit sometimes but did do a sample (which was fine)

A probiotic yogurt might help

Thanks guys Smile

Will try and cut down on her dairy tomorrow and maybe try probiotics. She seems ok in herself - I am just boaking at the potties! She's not had too many accidents though, bless her!

Try a ' white' diet rice, apples, chicken , rice crackers, banana etc , no dairy lots of water . Its a old wives tale kind of thing but it really helps mine when they are getting over it. Or helping just to re line the inners..
