Tongue tie division in older children - any experience please

DS1 has a tongue tie which was only picked up by me when he was 2.5. He is now 5.5 and also has ASD. All professionals we have been dealing with thus far (NHS) have said they won't do anything about it as there is no evidence that it will improve his speech. His speech is still unclear but he can make many of the sounds that are normally affected by tongue tie.

Fast forward 2 years and his current speech therapist (based at his school, ex-NHS) raised it with me just before the end of term. She said that she knew that NHS were very reluctant to do anything. She thought he was compensating very well but that operating might improve his speech. She also said that lots of children when they are older prefer to have it snipped as it can impede things like kissing. Although I'm not so worried about kissing, he can't lick his lips at all, or lick an ice-cream and that combined with the possible improvement in his speech is making us think again about having it operated on. I have a name of a consultant who apparently will do it, and we have private medical cover which I am hoping will pay for an op.

Has anyone had this done for their DCs when they were older? What was the operation like/recovery time? Was it done on NHS or privately?

my son had his tongue tie snipped at 11 months and it was a fight to get them to do it that late (NHS). he still has a signigigcant speech delay though (verbal dyspraxia).
the Op itself was done under general anthesthtic and was ok but still took a while.
Probably not as late as you wanted to hear but i am glad we had it done.

I had mine diagnosed and snipped at 11 after large amounts of speech therapy. I think it was private but not sure, sorry.

I had it under GA and spent a night in hospital, sore mouth for a couple of days (which I milked like mad for extra ice cream) but that was it.

I had to have more speech therapy after that to learn to use my tongue, still can't blow up balloons. The snip made a huge difference to my quality of life though.
