Antibiotics refusal??

Hi
My ds (3.5) has just been diagnosed with tonsillitis but after the first dose he's refusing ( and I mean bribery immune kicking and screaming refusal) to have any more. He's meant to take it 4 times a day for 10 days. Because of this I don't want to force him as its just not going to work. It's phenoxymethlpenicillin. Can it go in something? It's bloody vile I have to admit. Or can I ask for an alternative? Thanks in advance!

I use to mix my ds's with a spoonful of yogurt. It's best not to mix but if it's the only way IMO its better than nothing x

I use a syringe and squirt it to the back of the throat
He must take this correctly
Also once my ds realised he had to take it he was much better

The only way I have found is to syringe it into the back of his throat and get him to swallow. Reward with chocolate/sweets/ice lolly/anything!

My ds is a clever little bugger and knew it was in food when I tried to hide it.

I did find that once he had had it a few days then he tolerated it betterprobably because he knew he would get something after .

DS is taking this at the moment, at first it was a case of pinning down and forcing it (I am mean mummy I am afraid) but now a chocolate button means he takes it with no battle.

You can ask for them to change it to another one if he really won't take it.

Yep - syringe and back of throat for us too.... though, my youngest who was the most vociferous refuser turns out to be allergic to penicillin.... (about the third time she was prescribed it, she came out in a massive rash)..

LadyBear · 11/08/2012 20:57

Thanks for the swift replies. I used a syringe first time so he is wary of it already. Ok well I will give it another go in the morning armed with more bribes...yikes !

I pin ds2 down & syringe but on to the inside of the cheek, if i syringe stright in to the back of the throat he gags or spits it back out.
By shooting it on to the inside of the cheek he cant spit it back out.

Based on a friends advice I mixed it with honey this morning and it's gone down ok. However he does have a rash on the inside of his arms. Could be heat rash.BTW1- what constitutes a massive rash ?
Thanks

We had this with DD (21 months) a few weeks ago when she had tonsillitis. Even with 2 of us holding her down and forcing it in her, she would NOT swallow and spat it out while screaming and choking. In the end, the doctor said just to leave it and it would clear up on its own - which it did thankfully. Unfortunately all the "nice" flavoured antibiotics for children are not particularly effective for tonsillitis apparently.

DD now has whooping cough - looking forward to the next round of screaming tantrums while we attempt to give her antibiotics. Some great tips here though, thanks.

DS 5 is currently on same - he has had twice before so knows how vile it is :(

We do medicine followed by chocolate button / malteser whatever is to hand - he is that bit older so does help......

I struggle with the no food 1 hour before and 2 after, ok when he is poorly but by day 2 of antibiotics his appetite s back and we have fun and games!

Lexie1970 · 12/08/2012 12:32

Oh and re rash - that is a symptom of tonsillitus.....

LadyBear · 12/08/2012 13:00

Hi - just to say what my friend actually recommended was maple syrup which I have now bought, it's more liquid and easier to mix. I figure this will be ok as its essentially just sugar which they add to antibiotics anyway...... Good luck , whooping cough is horrible.

Ah right didn't know you could get a rash with it!

Sorry - the massive rash was ALL over the body - great big blotches all joining together eventually - it was VERY distinctly "wrong"....
