DS1 has had headaches for the last few months, he has also had some memory loss and blackouts. He saw the GP a month ago who referred him to the urgent paediatric clini at our local hospital. He saw the consultant 2 weeks ago who examined him and referred him for an MRI brain scan.

DS1 had the scan last night and we have been told it will be a 2 week wait for the results. DS has been focussing on worrying about the mechanics of the scan ie would it hurt? be dark in the scanner? until now but DH and I have got a dreaded 2 week wait. Although DS is frightened he's got a brain tumour (he's been googling!) and I'm trying not to think about it.

Just wanted to offload and some handholding really.

Hand holding here. I'm so sorry this must be a really frightening time for you. I have no experience in something like this but didn't want to leave your post unanswered. xx

5madthings · 08/08/2012 23:04

((2gorgeousboys)) holding your hand as well.

i had to have an mri to check for a brain tumour, well tumour in my pituitary gland and the wait was awful, it was all fine in the end :)

firstly how old is he? and secondly make him step away from google, you as well! it will do no good.

i ask his age btw as in pre-teens and teens, headaches and blackouts etc CAN be just to do with hormones, its good the hospital are being pro-active and covering all bases, fingers crossed it all comes back ok xxx

Holding hand. My DH is currently awaiting surgery for a brain tumour and my DD has had leukaemia so I have some insight into how you are feeling. I hope it is not a tumour at all, but even if it is, do bear in mind that many are benign and have great success rates with modern micro surgical techniques. PM me any time if you want to talk.

2gorgeousboys · 09/08/2012 06:54

Apologies for posting and running last night, no sooner had I started the thread than the interet here crashed Angry.

Thank you so much for all your comments, I've done really well stayng away from Google but DS1 remembered something he'd seen on televison had a google and is now convinced he's going to die Sad.

5madthings he's 12 (13 in Jan) so that's really reassuring to know, I did wonder if it could be hormonal.

Farlo thanks for your kind offer to PM. The wait for surgery must be awful for you and your DH. Hope your DD is fully recovered now, just had a peak at your profile - she sounds very brave and you must be very proud of her Grin.

Off for a cup of tea and then going to be busy at work today which is good because I manage not to think about things for at least oh 10 minutes then Smile.

Thank you 2gorgeousboys we had a couple of close calls with her but she is doing very well right now and has been off chemo for 9 months now which is just great. She is indeed incredibly brave and I am so proud of her I could burst Grin.

The waiting is hard for DH's op but we are getting second opinions on how best to operate as whilst it looks benign it is in a nasty wee spot and so it's kind of productive waiting in a way.

I hope the results come in quickly and put your and your son's mind at ease, it is so hard on them when they are old enough to understand everything. Fingers firmly crossed for you here that it's just a big false alarm and this time next week it will all be behind you!

MarianForrester · 09/08/2012 22:07

Oh, you must be so worried. Dd had an MRI scan last week to look for similar things, and has also been for an electrophysiology retina scan. To do with eyes, in her case.

They rang me to say the MRI was fine the next day- hope you get the same good news soon.

2gorgeousboys · 11/08/2012 17:55

Hi Marian, glad it was good news for your DD. Not heard anyhing yet so hoping no news is good news.

Thanks for all your support. I'm trying not to think about it so am not talking aboout it in real life so it really helps to off load here.

Dh had a pituitary tumour and they operated twice, both times he was back at work in three weeks! They are amazing. Fingers crossed for your ds.

maytheoddsbeeverinyourfavour · 11/08/2012 18:19

I hope the results come back quickly and I'll be keeping everything crossed that it's good news xx

purple15 · 11/08/2012 19:28

I had an mri scan and was told straight away, still on the table that it was a brain tumour. The no news is good news.

Stinkyfeet · 11/08/2012 20:10

I agree that no news is good news. We were told straight away that ds1 had a brain tumour - he was admitted the same day and operated on 4 days later. So they move fast when they need to.

Stay strong.

2gorgeousboys · 11/08/2012 20:18

Thanks Talking and maythe odds.

Purple sorry to hear you had bad news - I hope you are ok now?

Stinky - that must have been very scary for you and DS1. Hope things are ok now?

I have to say a fab young guy scanned him and he really made an effort to put DS1 at ease. He teased him, asked him if he had tattoos I didn't know about to make him giggle and did Darth Vader impressions with the helmet/mask thing they put DS2 in.

My DS had an MRI scan and we were told within one hour that he had a brain tumour. He had an op 2 days later.

If there was something there that needed immediate action you would have been told by now. I hope that you get good news very quickly, the wait for these things is horrendous.

chocolatecakeystuff · 13/08/2012 12:50

Hiya - I haven't read all the answers so some one might have covered this.
DD has had 2 MRI scans to date, the first was normal, and didn't hear back for a week

The second showed her cerebellum was shrinking - we got the phone call the following day.

If it's something really serious they will call you almost imediatly so if you haven't heard anything yet it's probably good news

2gorgeousboys · 17/08/2012 18:20

Well the hospital called this afternoon and it's good news Grin. The MRI scan is all clear and normal. We are all so relieved. DS1 burst into tears he was so relieved.

The consultant seems to think it's more than likely his age and hormones etc that are causing the headaches and we need to keep a note of when he has dizzy spells, headaches etc.

Thanks for all your support, advice and handholding it has really helped.

I am so glad to read this.

hippoCritt · 17/08/2012 18:24

So pleased for you all

Bunbaker · 19/08/2012 16:29

That's wonderful. I completely understand what you have been going through as we have had a worrying time with DD. She ended up having numerous blood tests, x-rays, MRI scan, full body scan and CT scan, plus a bone biopsy and bone marrow biopsy.

Thankfully she has no malignancy, but has an inflammation in her joints.

The NHS are absolutely brilliant!

FarloRigel · 23/08/2012 13:15

So pleased to see this update! Wonderful news Grin
