Warts

My 5-year old has the largest wart I have ever seen on one of her big toes. Rang the surgery who say that she has to see a doctor first because she is so young before the nurse can remove it. I can only get an appointment in 3 weeks time!! And will then probably have to wait again for a week or two before it can be removed!

Any suggestions as to what I could try in the meantime?

If is is causing her any discomfort at all (or walking difficulties aren't shoes a problem given its location?) I would ring the surgery again and say you are very concerned and need it looked at as soon as possible and big it up if necessary-- .

In the meantime, I wouldn't touch it at all -- some things might make it worse.

It's not life threatening, I wouldn't be pushing for an early GP appointment as this will only make delays for "actually ill" people worse. (having said that, 3 weeks is pretty crap)

In my recent and extensive experience (3 children and me FFS):

  • over the counter freeze sprays are crap.
  • Bazuka max strength does the job but I found it painful
  • Wartner in a pen thing seems to be working on smaller ones.

for a large one, I'd wait for the GP though. You're lucky as mine told me, a few years ago with DS1, that the NHS weren't removing them any more.

It's not causing discomfort as she is wearing sandals most of the time due to school holidays. Have not insisted on closed shoes. I think I will wait and not try anything over the counter. She is still little and it's not that usual to have warts at her age - just hope it does not spread. Will wait to hear what the GP recommends.

A polish lady taught me this and it worked for all warts on my kids - small and very large. Give it a try and I hope it works for you as well as it did for me!
Buy Cyder vinegar (the sort you would buy for cooking - the brand I used was Aspal and is available in all supermarkets). At bedtime soak a cotton wool pad in the vinegar so it is very wet but not dripping in a patch on the cotton wool pad large enough to cover the wart when placed on the wart. Place the vinegar soaked pad on the wart and wrap the foot in cling film (to keep it wet and keep the moisture next to the wart). Then put a sock, tights, or a verruca sock over the foot (the point is here to keep it all in place overnight) and let the child sleep with this on all night.
In the morning remove it all and just let it dry out (yes you will smell like a fish and chip shop for a while).
Carry on as normal and at some point in the future (it can take as long as a couple of weeks) you will suddenly notice the wart has gone.
good luck.
