My son is nearly 11 and for the past couple of years he has on occassions had excessive eye squinting. I have had it checked by a doctor who to be honest could not wait to get us out of the surgery he just said he would grow out of it...helpful!
Today at his assembly he spent the whole time squinting and blinking and to be honest I find it alarming. When I ask him why he is doing it he says his eyes feel irritated and dry. A couple of parents have mentioned it to me now as it is so noiticeable in assemblies and other school activities just not sure what to do. He is off to big school in September and I dont want him to get teased. It does not happent all the time. Can anyone relate to this?

Optician?

Sorry meant to say tried the optician and eyes are A1. He seems to think it may be a habit from possibly an eye infection.

Excessive blinking and squinting can be a sign of Tourettes (and if that's what it is there are other companion issues that you will want to have diagnosed and treated). You should really insist on a referral to neurologist and ed psych.

What you are describing sounds like a Tic disorder. I will second getting a referral to a paediatric neurologist asap.

Aside, have you at all noticed any other unexplained "habits" e.g throat clearing, maybe involuntary limb movements ?

If He says his eyes feel irritated and dry then maybe it's as simple as that? I used to get horribly dry eyes when I was younger and used artificial tear eye drops you can buy over counter.. Maybe try that?
