Hi

My dd aged just 3 has been poorly over last week with ear and throat infection. She has been on antibiotics for 5 days but still very grizzly. She has been hungry and thirsty and very irritable. It was probably a silly thing to do but I did a thumb prick ( my husband is Diabetic type 1) and tested her blood which had a reading of 14.. Is this normal - it sounds very high to me.. I called the docs and theyhave booked me in for tomorrow morn but I'm a bit worried..

glad all good today - see my post from yesterday tho as children do present as very ill with type 1

sonsmum · 02/08/2012 20:57

please please keep an eye on her.....Type 1 hits fast. My 4 yr old DC was perfectly 'normal', but after 2 days of a suspected urine infection, we had the devastating news he is Type 1....and it is devastating when it happens...it changes your life and food becomes numbers and you are never free from worry.
As he was caught so early he didn't go into deadly keotacidosis.
I really really hope your daughter does not have Type 1.
Your DH having Type 1 should be quite an expert himself, but essentially watch out for frequent urination and thirst.

Sorry out 2 lunch, but in the nicest way i need to say that that's not always the case, as they can rumble on for a while in 'honeymoon', then hit a crisis (sometimes months later) where it can be a matter of life or death. It's really important for people who may not be posting but who have concerns and are reading this. I know too many people who have had this happen to them, where it has been missed and down the line their children have become very ill.

no probs tomjoules

Tomjoules · 02/08/2012 21:01

Thanks :)

CustardQueen · 02/08/2012 21:11

Thank you all - appreciate all the advice. I hope she is turns out not not be have T1 but at least if she does then we have the knowledge and experience of DH's diabetes. I will keep a close eye on her and take her back if any cause for concern (but not doing any home finger pricking!). Sonsmum - thank you for word of warning.

TomJ and Sonsmum - I'm glad both your dc's are getting on ok. I can't imagine what it must be like to have to manage a child with diabetes.

Custard one thing I bought was of amazon was urine strips 50 for 2 pounds for ds no diabetes when after our sons dx was v worried shows colour change if high BG. Never use now but do not hesitate to use testing kit if in doubt.

Please read this:

www.childrenwithdiabetesuk.org/diabetes-basics/could-my-child-have-diabetes/

and keep a careful eye on her. My dd went down very quickly with dka. I hope it's not diabetes, but if it is it's best caught sooner rather than later.
