1st sickness and diahorrea bug in 7 month old

My LO came down with a bug on Friday morning. He had his usual 6oz bottle and just as I was about to give him breakfast 30 minutes later, he threw up his milk. During the day he was a little restless but took his milk as usual, though not much, and his solid intake dwindled.
By Saturday he was grizzly but had his 'happy' moments but all day he refused his milk and solids and the little milk he was taking he was bringing back up, not quite vomiting but heavy posseting, if that makes sense! He also was coughing as though he was swallowing the wrong way. He also had a very wet poo. By Saturday evening, he was starving, took 7oz of milk and promptly threw it all back up. He had a restless night.
On Sunday we decided to stick to milk only. He had 5oz at 8am, seemed 'okay' and then threw up at midday. After that he went downhill. Tried him with water from his doidy cup. He took a little, I think, but most ends up all over him. He wouldn't entertain water in a free flow cup. He had little interest in anything. We gave him a 5oz bottle at 1pm which he took and fell straight to sleep. By mid-afternoon we had a nappy from hell. He seemed ravenous by tea time so I gave him a rice cake. It went down well so he had another and 3oz of milk at bedtime. He refused his 4pm bottle. He had a relatively good night. Woke at midnight and had 3oz. He slept the rest of the night with just a bad dream at 4:40am but then woke alert and happy at 6:45am.
However, that alertness didn't last long. He usually has a nap 2 hours after waking anyways, but he had 5oz of milk which was good at 7:10am but by 7:30am, he had had enough and took to his bouncer and just watched the world go by so to speak! He seems to have no energy at all.
I have a GP appointment at 11am but wanted to see what experience and advice anyone could offer in terms of:

  1. How often do i offer milk and how much?
  2. Any advice on how to get water into him?
  3. When do I start back on solids? He was always a good eater!

Main thing: do not worry. You are seeing the GP. I am afraid I had mine too long ago (24 and 21 years ago) to remember techniques. The Health Visitor might be able to advise?

Firstly, you're seeing the GP today so it's just getting through the hours til then. When mine was 20months she had horrendous gastro bug and we ended up at A&E because she started refusing food & liquids. All she did was sleep. There was no magic formula to get her to drink. We called nhs direct who were really good. How old is your Lo? When they're ill like this all routine goes out the window and you just have to play it by ear. We ended up by giving her syringes of blackcurrant rehydration salts at the hospital. Slowly she got her energy back and appetite followed. It was a slow process over a few days. Seeing the GP is your best bet. Try not to worry. Not long til 11am now. If you really can't wait to see your doctor I recommend nhs direct for some advice. I've always found them very helpful.

Thanks. The appointment was an emergency one so I knew I probably wouldn't see my usual doctor whose own child is only two weeks older than my LO! We saw the 'new' doctor and he was more helpful than our last visit regarding something else, I felt I didn't get an indepth explanation, advice, reassurance, whatever you want to call it.
He did eat today - two tomato slices (organix finger foods), and a pear yoghurt at lunch and he refused his usual favourite cheesy pasta with veg at dinner but happily ate a tropical fruit pouch. He did sit with us at our dinner and chewed on garlic bread and he had some cheese. He refused ALL milk, including his mid-afternoon bottle which he has at 3pm until bedtime and only then did he take 3oz.
Hoping for a better day tomorrow.

My Dd had terrible bug at 7 months, we lived in Africa.
Experience after two dcs and various tummy bugs, is stay clear of milk, esp if dc is vomiting. A day with no milk won't hurt, but fluids are very important.
Also I think too many days of vomiting are a concern, but diarroeah can linger a good while.

My dd3 had a bug at 7 months. Her sisters had had it and we're better within 24 hours but hers went on for days! I was breast feeding so just carried on. But the foods they say are good for this are banana, apple sauce, white bread and rice. Good luck x

Ds had quite a few stomach bugs when he was under and just over 1yr. We were always advised to water milk down so the ratio of water was higher than milk.
