Hi
I think my 6 month old had HFM a week ago, started with mild fever then was very grouchy and not herself for a couple of days. This included not eating much bottle or solids. There were no obvious spots in her mouth but i couldnt see too far in. Only now that I've got this horrid bug have I realised she had HFM.
A week on she seems a lot brighter in herself but her appetite and milk intake has definatly gone down. The past couple of days she's had diarrhoea.
How long have others had the virus?? Did it affect your LOs appetite for a while afterwards??
Thanks

My baby had it really badly, lots of ulcers her in her mouth. It took about 2 weeks after she recovered for her appetite to come back - the dr said it was very normal and to let her eat what she wanted. She lived on yogurt pretty much.

Hope your baby is better soon

Thanks. I will get yoghurt buying.
She was doing so well with her weaning until this and a cold about a week before. My poor little angel

I'm confused as to why you think its HFM? Do you have blisters etc now and you think she's passed it on to you?

Tbh I wouldn't have thought the diorrhea was related but it might just be that her tummy isn't used to digesting much after being ill.

If you're worried see a GP. If she's ok in herself (bright, happy) and is drinking plenty and eating a bit and still having wet and dirty nappies then try not to worry too much.

2 weeks does sound a long time for HFM but it could be that she had a different virus and not HFM or indeed maybe she has had a different bug from you and she's just run down etc rather than actively ill iyswim?

Ds had HFM when he was about 3 mo. he had no spots in his mouth, but his hands and feet were covered. As was his bottom. He was a little grizzly, but but wasn't off his food and didn't have an upset stomach. Grizzlyness lasted maybe 5 days and the spots went after a week or so.

Form what you've described it doesn't sound like HFM. Had she been in contact with anyone who had it?

It's also quite rare to get it as an adult as we usually are exposed to it as children and build immunity. My GP said there was next to no chance and adult catching it from ds.

If she has been I'll for a couple of weeks id get her checked out by your GP.

DS has had hfm twice- defo that as de had to confirm for him to be ok to continue at nursery (was ok in self just at night was awful!)- and what your describing doesn't sound like hfm
Hfm is worse at night, often with raised temp, pin prick spots on some/ all of h f m
Often off food but will drink/bf for comfort
V contagious Fran's usually got it & passed it in before you even know they have it
In DS case lasted 2/3 nights both times, ok by day 4
Fwiw he was about 7mo and 11 mo at times
I would go back to dr if youre worried

My dd has just got over this, she had a slight dodgy belly at the end, and threw-up every single night she had it. Has taken about 3 weeks in total, was confirmed by drs that it was HFM.
DH got it too and although symptoms a lot less he got really bad diarrhoea with it, so yes - stomach probs can be part of it.

It's a horrid virus I hope you all get well soon - it really draaaags this illness, one of the nastier ones.

Nini100 · 30/07/2012 13:19

Thanks for your messages.
Will prob go to dr to be on safe side. At 6 months old it's so hard to tell exactly what it is as at this age she could be teething too??.
Still a bit off her food today, began eating lunch then burst into tears halfway through plus a lot of pooing goin on, that include a full outfit change if you know what I mean.
She seems happy and chirpy otherwise

Quick post here but DD is 2.5 and we are just entering week 2 of HFM, have been to doctors (twice) who confirmed it was most likely HFM.

Trajectory so far... mild fever and complaining of "sore mouth" for 3 days, then the blisters appeared on hands and mouth over the next 5-6 days. No new blisters for last 24 hrs but she is still off her food - I think she may be afraid to eat because it has been so painful for her.

It is a truly horrible illness...

rockdoctor · 30/07/2012 14:40

By the way, the doctor didn't mention diarrhoea but he did say she might get a very sore bum as the virus goes straight through them iyswm
