DD has just swallowed 10 cherry stones

So I just gave DD (aged 6) a bowl containing 10 cherries. I didn't watch her eating them - I thought at 6 years old she was old enough to eat them sensibly without supervision - made a mistake there! She has eaten all 10 cherries complete with the stones. Apparently she "forgot" that the cherries contained stones Hmm (the fact her mouth was covered with cherry juice indicates to me that she did chew them so would have spotted the stones - but anyway...

I'm a bit worried that she's swallowed 10 of the bloody things. Should I be ringing NHS Direct about this or will they just laugh at me?

I would call them as its quite a few! I assume they will just come out but worth a phone call to check that they wont need assistance!!

ekidna · 28/07/2012 15:01

she'll be fine.
what is your concern?
do call NHS direct if it will reassure you.

ScarletSmellyFeet · 28/07/2012 15:03

I used to do this all the time as a child, and I'd eat an entire apple core and pips included and the skin of watermelon.

I came to no harm.

Thumbwitch · 28/07/2012 15:04

Phone NHS Direct - she'll probably be fine anyway but that is a fair few stones! Just one would be no issue, would come out - but that many, there is a minor risk of blockage, I suppose.
Silly girl! but not as daft as my 4.5yo DS swallowing daddy's wedding ring a couple of months ago

intravenouscoffee · 28/07/2012 15:08

Can't imagine it will do her much harm. If she starts complaining of bad stomach pains you should probably ring someone but otherwise I wouldn't worry. As far as I know they can't be digested so you'll see them again in a day or so.

HugeMedalTally · 28/07/2012 15:08

Oh, no, this is a disaster!

Soon there will be a cherry tree growing out of her ears!

Seriously, my DC often eat cherry stones with no ill effects. I'm sure she will be fine.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 28/07/2012 15:11

Don't want to worry you, but a swift google found this: chemistry.about.com/b/2007/09/12/yes-apple-seeds-and-cherry-pits-are-poisonous.htm

CarlaBruni · 28/07/2012 15:13

As long as she didn't crunch them up she'll be fine - the kernel contains cyanide

lagartija · 28/07/2012 15:13

ds is four and did this last month. He was fine. Not even any weird poo. Must have an iron stomach.

Thumbwitch · 28/07/2012 15:26

The stones won't release their amygdalin unless they were bitten in half when she ate them (same with apple seeds) and they won't digest if she didn't bite them in half so you don't need to worry about the cyanide issue. :)

Servalan · 28/07/2012 15:26

Yikes! (I keep telling her off for swallowing apple pips too). Have phoned NHS Direct to be on the safe side...

Sorry, I didn't mean to scaremonger. She'll probably be fine, but we don't know if she did chew the stones. Better safe than sorry.

Thumbwitch · 28/07/2012 15:46

You must have teeth like this, OldLady - I'd break mine if I tried to chew cherry stones! Grin

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 28/07/2012 16:02

Yeah, that's a good point, but it's mentioned so possible! I'm sure she'll be fine, but glad the OP is contacting NHS Direct.

suburbandream · 28/07/2012 16:06

No, no, no HugeMedalTally, you are wrong - the cherry tree will grow out of her bellybutton, everyone knows that Grin. Seriously though I hope she is ok, I am sure NHS will reassure you

PacificDogwood · 28/07/2012 16:08

Beware machine gun noises when she goes to the toilet Grin.

She will be fine, of course. Eating cherry stones is all part of growing up, isn't it?
