Panicking a bit about DD (2)'s poo - LOADS of mucus

she just farted (or so I thought), but she had done a poo in her nappy - went to change her, some of the poo was very soft (often is with her, have been putting it down to the amount of fruit she eats), some small bits were harder, and then there was a huge mucusy/jelly like thing - when I say huge I don't know if I'm exaggerating but I would say you could fit it in a shot glass

why do these things always happen on a saturday?! She seems fine in herself, did mention yesterday that her tummy hurt but she wasn't unhappy about it. She's behaving normally

do I need to contact OOH, NHS direct, GP on Monday or do I just get a grip

It could be a symptom of coeliac disease (gluten intolerance) so you could ask for a blood test at the GP.

tomatoface · 28/07/2012 10:40

I did wonder that but this is the first time it's happened out of the blue - if she had coeliac disease would it not have happened before? (she is nearly 3)

and she doesn't have a cold so it's not that..

if I wait til Monday do you think I can keep the nappy til then or will it have 'gone off' so to speak & will they think I'm mad?!

Don't worry about keeping the nappy! :o I'm sure a description would be plenty.

WRT coeliac - no, it wouldn't necessarily have happened before. My DSD was diagnosed age 8, my DH age 38! The antibodies take time to build up in the intestine. Both my DCs were tested age 2 although both negative thankfully. Not saying it would definitely be that, and I have no idea what else it could be, but may be worth bearing in mind if it keeps happening.

I would say don't worry if she is ok in herself, maybe she just ate something that didn't agree with her, but no harm in seeing a GP if you are concerned. IMO.

Just thought i share my experience in case it helps. I have had this mucus thing before. I also have coeliac disease but the mucous stuff is dairy related for me & apparently quite common.

is she teething?

ekidna · 28/07/2012 15:06

take a photo

tomatoface · 28/07/2012 16:06

thanks for replies
no, she's not teething
have taken a photo & will throw the nappy away!

I have wondered in the past if she has a dairy intolerance because she has never been keen on (cows)milk, yoghurt or cheese & her poo is often squidgy

I think I'll see how the next poo is and book an appt with gp next week
