Is this heat exhaustion in a 4yo? No fever, but photosensitive

And yes, I have checked for other signs of meningitis. He can hold his chin on his chest and has been moving his neck around, he has no fever, he has no loose poo or vomiting, he has no rash.

We were out fruit-picking this morning until 11.30 (last halfhour of that he was eating an ice lolly, playing in a sandpit under a canopy, on a bouncy castle (yes, I know) under a canopy, and he was wearing a hat, appropriate clothing, sunscreen. Spent the rest of the day indoors in the cool, doing lego, until 4, when I took him out to the splash park. Sun not as strong and he wasn't wearing a hat Blush. It was after 4 by then, but still hot. (We're in SE.)

Slightly picky at teatime but ate everything. Went to bed as normal. Woke, or rather didn't wake, but was crying in his sleep, an hour ago, and gradually became more unsettled until he was responding to us but crying a lot. Sad He was hiding his eyes from the light (lamp on the lowest dimmer setting in his bedroom) and eventually demanded we turn it off. NO fever. Gave him some nurofen because he seemed uncomfortable and said he was 'not very well'. He's got a bit of a blocked nose all of a sudden. He was definitely distressed because he wanted to be back asleep, but the light sensitivity thing has me twitching. We've cooled his room down (opened the window) and tried to give him some drink. He's finally gone back to sleep and seems more settled.

WWYD? I've heard that photosensitivity can be a symptom of heat exhaustion but can't find mention of this online. He really doesn't have any critical meningitis symps and has no fever (his skin is cool, normal - not cold/clammy).

I think he may have disliked the light because he just wanted to be asleep rather than any other cause. I would check on him before you go to bed and if he's sleeping normally I would say this is heat and nothing else. Anything else that worries you though take him to A&E.

Could he have a migraine or bad headache? Sorry this is a short reply just wanted to ask.

Tbh I'd have thought bad dream - woke up disorientated but shattered and wanting to sleep so wanted light off?

Keep eye on him.

Thanks, everyone! He did settle back to sleep after a while - took me talking to him and even attempting to read him a story (in the dark!) before he calmed down, but we both had the very strong impression that he was, whatever else was going on, pissed off that he'd woken up and wanted to get back to sleep! Though the lamp thing is odd - normally if he wakes up in the night and wants reassurance, he wants it switched ON (on the dimmest setting). Don't think it was a headache, he wasn't saying it hurt and I didn't have that impression from the way he was holding himself.

I'm checking on him in a moment. Tempted to sleep on a mattress in there, but I think it's mostly because I'm freaked out a little. Grin

Update - he's absolutely fine this morning. Smile No idea what was going on - I suppose even one classic meningitis symptom is liable to send me a bit round the bend with worry. Grin

Photo sensitivity can also be a symptom of vit A deficiency. Glad he is feeling better!

We had a day at the beach on Sunday, my kids were running around a lot enjoying themselves but the next day both were under the weather and my DS was suffering with his asthma. I think we haven't had time to get used to this hot weather so it's a bit of a shock to the system.

Be careful he drinks enough, even if you're in the house, it's still hot and you can lose a lot of water through sweating.
