Whats wrong with my dd1?

Dd1 complains of feeling ill mst days, i have always sent her on to school (after gining calpol) and she manages at school all day, i thought it was just caused by anxiety around school but she has also been complaining at weekends.

Yesterday she developed what looked like heat rash (which was fine, she had been outside and it was a bit warm yesterday), then this morning she woke up feeling ill (again) and had a sore throat and felt very hot, i noticed a odd mark/rash on her shoulder which looked similar to a love bite (dark purple spotty bruise, hard to explain). I phoned out of hours gp as the mark/rash did not disapear under a glass and they wanted to send an ambulance as she was showing signs of meningitus (even though she seemed fine other than the odd mark and high temp), i refused and i took her to out of hours gp at the hospital.

Doctor checked her over, agreed she had heat rash but was puzzled about the other mark/rash, dd1's temp had come down by the time we got there (thanks to calpol) and dd1 seemed fine. Doctor seemed concerend that dd1 had been complaining of being ill for over a month and was concerend about bruising on dd1 (seems to be bruising easily and not knowing how she did it) but she sent us home and told us to take dd1 straight to A&E if any more marks appeared during the day.

I am now worried as poor dd1 seems to have been unwell for a while and i have been sending her to school, also worried about the marks and bruises, i dont want to google as i am scared at what will come up.

Has anyone else had a child with similar symptoms and it has turned out to nothing?

Any ideas what it could be?

I have no experience of this but wanted to say that i think you should take her to the gp as they will probably want to do blood tests. Seeing as its been going on a while i think you shouldn't delay.

Thank you for the reply, i dont want to sound like im panicking or making a mountain out of a mole hill Grin.

She doesn't seem that ill but complains a couple times a day about feeling ill (just feeling yuk), i hadn't really thought about the bruises until the doctor asked me then i realised she has quite a few and doesn't remember hurting herself, she usually makes a fuss if she does hurt herself so would have thought she would remember as some of the bruises are quite blue/green.

I do know that unexplained bruises are something Drs look into as it can indicate some problems.

PooPooInMyToes · 22/07/2012 14:14

How old is she by the way?

Try not to panic but get it checked. Hope she's ok.

Marne · 22/07/2012 14:17

She's 8, she has Aspergers and gets anxiety (which i thought was the cause of her feeling ill as she gets anxious about things at school) she also has issues with movement in her legs which doctors say is Hypermobility and low tone (but i'm not so sure). I have taken her to the gp (a month ago) and explained about the 'feeling ill' and they were not very helpfull, i will try and get her an appointment tomorrow or tuesday so they can see the odd mark on her arm.

I second PooPoo's advice- unexplained bruising and painful legs may or may not be connected, and it would be best to get her checked over just to rule out anything serious.

Hope she feels better soon Smile

PooPooInMyToes · 22/07/2012 14:32

What's the movement in her legs?

My daughter gets rather hysterical about pains, itches etc and was ill a few moths and i assumed she was making a fuss over nothing again. Turned out the itchy bum she was freaking out about was worms, rather established ones. It was horrific! Its so easy and only natural to dismiss it sometimes.

Marne · 22/07/2012 14:48

She has fuctulating tone (sp), one minute her legs can be very floppy, the next very stiff, she has tight hamstrings and gets painful legs and ankles (her feet turn inwards at the ankle).

No itchy bottom here Grin but is eating like she has worms Smile.

She always looks pale and her skin quite transparent.

PooPooInMyToes · 22/07/2012 15:07

I wasn't suggesting she had worms! Grin just sympathising with how easy it is to dismiss these things.

Have her legs always been like that?

I met someone else with a hypermobility issue and they were very pale as well. I wonder if there is a link? Has she always been that pale?

Sounds like she needs to see a specialist if she hasn't already.

cocolepew · 22/07/2012 15:10

Definitely get blood test sdone.
If she's pale she might be anemic, but you would need to find the cause of it too.

GotMyGoat · 22/07/2012 15:13

Agree with all the suggestions above,

But also wondered if you had considered food allergies for the feeling yuck?

My sister is lactose intolerant, but wasn't diagnosed till she was 18 - but we can all see it looking back through her childhood as she was always feeling unwell.

Hope she's ok,

Badvoc · 22/07/2012 15:18

She needs to get some blood taken to rule out thing like anaemia and glandular fever and a full blood count
DO NOT GOOGLE!!!!

Runoutofideas · 22/07/2012 15:20

My dd had been complaining of tummy ache on and off for probably 6 weeks. Each time could be explained by anxiety/butterflies, constipation, hunger, wind etc. It was only when she had a raging temperature that wouldn't go down with calpol, that I took her to the doctor and she was diagnosed with a Urinary tract infection and given antibiotics. DOesn't sound the same as your dd, but just goes to show how easy it is to ignore symptoms for a while. I would get her checked out. Hope she's ok.

PooPooInMyToes · 22/07/2012 15:24

Also, not ignoring the fact that she should be seen by a Dr to rule things out, have you considered that her feeling unwell before school combined with the bruises could suggest she's being bullied? Doesn't explain the feeling unwell at weekends though but thought id mention it.

Marne · 22/07/2012 15:36

Poo- i don't think she's being bullied as she tells me whenever a child upsets her or touches her (even if a child brushes past her), she seems happy at school, just feels poorly when she wakes up and early evening. I'm always in close contact with her school and they know about her feeling unwell and her anxiety so they keep a very close eye on her. I thought she would feel better on friday after school broke up (as she can relax a little) but she carried on complaining of being ill.

She did have a blood test booked 6 months ago as we suspected a gluten intolerance but things improved and we cancelled the appointment, hopfully the doctor can book us in again to be tested.

OP posts:
PooPooInMyToes · 22/07/2012 15:44

What made you suspect gluten?

Marne · 22/07/2012 18:21

She eats a lot of gluten (probably too much), she went through a stage of having tummy ache after eating it, we went gluten free for a few months and her tummy ache went, we then re-introduced it and all was ok. Her diet is quite limmited due to her Aspergers, she mostly eats bread and cheese (gluten and dairy).

We have solved the mystery of the mark on her arm (she had done it herself as i caught her sucking her arm this afternoon whilst she was on the pc, she didn't realise she was doing it Hmm )

Just a thought but my son had similar symptoms when he was eight. It was diagnosed as Henoch Schönlein Purpura (HSP). He complained a lot of feeling tired with bruises on the legs and arms. Google it and see what you think. We googled his symptoms and told the Gp what we thought and we were right Grin

That's a relief!

Marne · 22/07/2012 20:00

Poopoo-i was slightly angry but very relieved, she now has 2 rather large looking love bites, i just hope she doesn't do any more. Now just to work out if she is feeling ill or not Smile.
