the cradle cap has gone away. baby is 8 months old... and now she just has a horribly itchy head. detonox shampoo doesn't work, nor just olive or jojoba oil.

is there anything else i can try

Have you tried aqueous cream? It's worked wonders for my DS's dry scalp.

Coconut oil

Have you seen your GP yet?

Belmo · 21/07/2012 17:40

Hydrocortisone from GP cleared ours up, tried what felt like everything else in the world first.

going to the gp on wed.

just thought i would ask here first.

what is aqueous cream? is it waxy type thick cream? my pharmacist gave me this giant tube of thick waxy petroleum jelly type thing and that hasn't helped either mainly because she has so much hair that it just sticks in the hair and doesn't get to scalp.

Aqueous cream should really only be used as a soap. Try something like e45/diprobase

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 21/07/2012 19:36

Try the mildest shampoo you can find. An online search should find you a sulphate and paraban free and hypo allergenic shampoo. Or Stop using everything else sometimes water alone is enough. The more stuff you use on their hair the more you strip away the natural oils . Stick to water. And of course speak to your gp. :)

of course the day I went to the gP it wasn't that bad. It comes and goes. GP seemed like I was overreacting and just said try a thick moisturising cream that pharmacist gave me...and apply often.

Easier said then done.

coconut oil. I can't link as I'm on phone but google Fushi coconut oil, I got mine through Amazon. It's solid in the jar, keep it refridgerated and melt a little in your palm as and when you need it. I think you can get it in Holland and Barrett too. We are a flaky scalp family and it works wonderfully. I just rub a teaspoon into scalp an hour or so before washing - even better if you leave it on overnight but protect your pillows first.

Longtalljosie · 27/07/2012 07:00

How often are you shampooing / rinsing? I know her head must be a right old mess with all the cream and flakes but I'd try to do that less, if possible...

hello, like the OP said, Aqueous cream should only be used as a soap - it is not actually a cream, and 40% of children are allergic to it. Even though it is called 'cream' in its title, it is a soap. Many Docs still prescribe it as they do not know it is a cream, and it is cheap as chips. Use something with no perfume, no preservatives or any other crap, i.e. Epaderm, or there is a newer product called Aveeno (I've not tried it though, but have heard it is good). Products like epaderm can be used as a soap/ointment, and might leave the hair a bit greasy, but should work. I used to work for a woundcare/dermatology co. and would only use products with no shite in - it's scary what some companies put in their baby products!
