EBF baby has stopped having poos?

My DD2 is 12wks and hasn't had a poo for four days, she's usually a 4- 5 a day girl.

She is feeding well, her tummy doesn't feel hard and I haven't seen her straining to go at all. But she has been very fractious for the last two days, which is very out of charater. Not to mention her farts smell like something died up there!

I called my HV clinic and explained the above, I was told that it was normal for BF babies. Ok, good. I then asked if there was anything I could do or how long could I expect for it to last - HV just repeated that it was normal and that I shoudn't worry.

As much as I'm enjoying not having to change dirty nappies and deal with stained clothes does anyone have any advice on how to help her along? Or how long it will be until it stops being normal?

I think up to 10 days is quite possible, from what I was told. dtds are now 10mo but they were the same. It's because your milk is exactly what they need so there's very little that the body doesn't absorb, so nothing left to come out as poo.

As long as you are still getting wet nappies there's no need to worry about constipation in ebf babies...

I think it was about 12w when we had this - which for us tied in with a growth spurt.

DD2 had a growth spurt about a week ago but she doesn't seem to have settled again, I wonder if she's still having the growth spurt just a little less crazed with it?

Thanks for your reply Princess, I feel better knowing what to expect.

Watch out though - it'll be a poonami when it does finally come!

I worried exactly like you... My EBF DD didn't poo for about 2 weeks! I was so stressed about it (despite everything I'd read about BF saying to expect just that.) Eventually - she did! - a little inoffensive mess... And that was all for another 10 days - and that became our routine until we started to introduce solids :) Now I dream of non-stinky nappies
As long as there are plenty of wet nappies and your DD2 seems happy and thriving - try not to worry. Or become obsessed with poo like I did! Blush

Well beginnersluck - poonami indeed!

I had a shower, when I came back she looked like an oompa-lumpa from the waist down - 27 bits of cotton wool later and she's finally clean - I might have to burn her sleep suit though Grin

I'm not sure why poo concerns me so much (she had a green poo a few weeks ago, that freaked me out too), glad to know I'm not the only one though!

Occasional green poo is normal. Not pooing for days is normal. Noxious farts are normal. Poonamis are normal. Having a baby is just rock and roll.

Poonami - God I love that word.

She hasn't done another one since but her farts are getting more and more noxious by the hour - my DP described them as worse than dog farts and he's right!

She also has a lovely habit of releasing her evil wind when I'm doing her nappy.

Charming Grin
