Whooping cough???

My 7 month old DS has a really deep cough which sounds like that of whooping cough, except he's been vaccinated....could it be a mild case?

He also makes the same noise sometimes when he's trying to talk/shout? Low fever, but he's also teething and although bit more tired of late isn't really affected in any other way?

Have been to the doctors who said there's no infection as his chest is clear. The noise is horrible and I'm worried there's something wrong with him, the noise isn't normal.

Does anyone have any ideas please?

Does he cough and cough without being able to draw breath in between until there is no air left to cough out and then when it stops make the whooping sound as he struggles to get the air back in? If so I would say it is Whooping Cough. I wouldn't discount it even if he doesn't do that because babies don't always behave in the same way as children and adults.

I would expect his chest to be clear so if that's the reason your GP discounted it he/she needs to do some reading.

Having been vaccinated doesn't give him guaranteed protection and if he has Whooping Cough there are some specific antibiotics he should be given right now to help his body fight the bacteria which causes it.

If he starts to have episodes where he can't make any noise i.e. his airway is blocking completely when he coughs you need to take him to hospital immediately.

Is there a different GP at your practice you could take him to tomorrow?

Thank you very much for that information. I have an appointment for tomorrow with a different GP so will bear in mind what you have said. Many thanks for taking the time to reply.

Iirc the antibiotics are more to decrease the infectious period. There is no actual treatment for it. Hope he feels better soon.
