Baby with sticky eye

She's 4mo and for the last couple of days has had a gunky eye in the morning. Do I need a trip to the GP (conjunctivitis?) or is there something I can do at home? How do I best clean it? It sticks her eyelashes together Sad

Is her red or inflamed at all? My DD had this at 5 months and the doc told me it wa because her tear duct hadn't opened up completely. It cleared up after a few weeks. I washed her eye with cooled boiled water. New cotton ball for each swipe. If its bothering her or is seems itchy or inflamed I would get it checked.

DD has problems with her eyes, the doctor recommends washing it regularly with cotton wool wet with a little salt in warm water. Sometimes babies do just have sticky eyes in the morning. If its just gunk that washes off and doesn't come back loads then it probably isn't an infection, whereas I think if the lids start to get swollen and inflamed it could be. However I'm not a professional Smile - do you have a HV drop-in maybe that you could take her to? And if her eye seems red and sore as well than I would take her to the GP.

Are you bf? If so, drop boob milk in each eye - it has immuglobin in it which fights the germs. Do a few times a day after cleaning as per below.

Or cooled boiled water in a bowl, drop in some johnsons baby shampoo (one or two drops). Then wipe baby's eyes with this, use one cotton wool piece per wipe to avoid reinfection. Do it a few times a day.

As she's not a newborn anymore, conjunctivitis isn't such an issue.

Top, thanks ladies... Yeah I fell out with my HV earlier in the week and my GP is useless, so will clean and try boob milk!
It's not red or inflamed so will see how we go...

If you are concerned, though, keep pushing. DD is 5mo and I've spent ages telling everyone that I'm concerned about her eyes as they are red and she rubs them all the time, and finally got a diagnosis the other day after pestering everyone I knew to agree that something was wrong. Like books baby, DD has problems with her tear ducts (only the other way around so her eyes are very dry). Nothing serious, should grow out of it, but just so nice to know I'm not imaging things! So if they continue to be gunky and you're not happy, take her to the GP again. Can you see another GP or HV?
