Help please- dd2 in agony with chickenpox in genitals

We're on day 2 of chickenpox. Dd2 is 6. Her vagina has loads of the blisters inside it. This had got worse and worse over past 2 hours. She's had 2 bicarbonate baths; I've tried sudocrem and then aloe Vera (washing the area in tepid water each time) but nothing is working. She had piriton over an hour ago and calpol 45 mns ago.

I'm stuck here wih her and dd1, dh is at work til about 11. She's obviously in pain and the spots are beyond itchy; she's twitching violently with each itch/pain and howling. She's usually very stoic with illness & pain but this is awful.

I could try ringing PIL & see if he could drive over & get to late night chemist - what would work do you think?

DD had this too but not quite to the extent you're describing. It was helped by being in the bicarbonate baths so I gave her lots of those and she stayed in the bath for a long while each time (topping up with water as needed). I put calamine lotion on the spots themselves using a cotton bud as she wouldn't let me touch them with my hands due to the pain and itching.

Is she having any difficulty weeing? DD had to wee in the bath on one occasion as the stinging was so bad. Just keep her well hydrated and try to ride it out. Sorry not to have any useful advice. Chicken pox can be really horrible so you have my total sympathy.

Itchyandscratchy · 16/07/2012 20:37

Thank you. For the first time tonight she's actually stopped crying and is looking like she'll drop off. She's still twitching badly but it's quiet at least. I'm in bed with her. Looks like you were right about riding it out! Dd1s been in tears too, upset to see her little sister like this. Bloody bedlam. Of all the nights for dh to be on call...

But let's hope for some calm now. Thank you. I'll get calamine in the morning. Can that be applied internally? It's right inside her labia poor thing

try giving her piriton - it should help the itching

intravenouscoffee · 16/07/2012 20:45

I think calamine is fine inside the labia but try it on less sensitive skin first to make sure it doesn't react. Glad she's starting to settle a bit.

For us the second and third days were that worst part, I felt so sorry for DD. by the third night all the spots had appeared and some of the bigger ones had crusted over so she slept better that night which helped with everything else. Also, we watched a lot of Disney. I can't see the Princess and the frog without thinking of chicken pox! Hope your DD is past the worst.

ValentineBombshell · 16/07/2012 20:48

Give her piriton and pain relief, as well as the bicarb baths.

ValentineBombshell · 16/07/2012 20:49

Piriton in liquid form. If you know anyone who has a child who suffers from hayfever they might have some.

cocolepew · 16/07/2012 20:50

You can give neurofen at the same time as calpol. I usually do them 2 hours apart.

lapsedorienteerer · 16/07/2012 20:54

Either Aveeno Oat Bath or just fill a muslin cloth with porridge oats, knot tightly and place in bath.

Cashncarry · 16/07/2012 20:54

If you've got someone going to the chemist, get some virasoothe - it's a gel that can go in the nappy area so I presume it's ok around the labia although not inside. Aveeno powder is also good in the bath. All 3 of mine had it in their nether regions and had quite a few midnight baths to give them some relief. Hope she feels better soon Sad

cocolepew · 16/07/2012 21:01

Would the johnsons baby powder with lavender offer any relief. Poor DD it must be awful.

Handsfullandinamuckingfuddle · 16/07/2012 21:14

Oh that sounds terrible - poor DD and poor you.

Bit of a long shot but do you think natrual yoghurt might help ...? I know it helps with thrush. Hope she has a restfull night and there is improvment tomorrow.

Itchyandscratchy · 16/07/2012 22:32

Thanks for all the helpful comments.
She's sleeping now, although still twitching in fits. Dd1 had the pox when she was 3 and it was never this bad.
It must be so painful having the bloody blisters there - poor thing.

Well I'm off work to be with her tomorrow so I'm anticipating some Disney, some Chitty Chitty and maybe a bit of Muppets, if I'm lucky. Anything but this awful itching and howling again...! fingers crossed x

How is she today?

Itchyandscratchy · 26/07/2012 10:56

God sorry coco. I didn't see your post - thanks for asking. Obviously, she's fine now but we had 2 days of not-very-nice and dd2 feeling very poorly, then she picked up from there. She had most issues with her poor face and vagina. she missed all of the last week of school, bless her.
