Dd is 4.5 and due to start school in sept. the last month or so she is continually over tired. She is sleeping about 11 hours a night and has suddenly started dropping off of we are in the car any length during the day.

She will often cry saying she is tired, rubbing her eyes, want to go home to rest if we are out and about etc. She eats well and is otherwise healthy.

Should I see the doc?

I would. It will put your mind at rest if nothing else.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 16/07/2012 18:31

Will they think I'm some kind of hypochondriac?

No. If this tiredness is totally uncharacteristic then it is worth checking it out. It might be worth taking a urine sample along for the GP to dip test as well.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 16/07/2012 18:51

Thanks, will do

11 hours kip and nodding off in the car wouldn't worry me. The rest would. GP definitely.

I've got an apt for next Thursday morning. What should I be asking?

BerthaTheBogBurglar · 19/07/2012 16:04

Well, just what you've asked on here, I guess.

Is she weeing / drinking more than usual?

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 19/07/2012 19:41

Not that I've noticed. Still no better. She normally loves going swimming and today said shed rather rest on the sofa. Am getting worried.

Has she just been ill (post viral tiredness?) Or maybe a bit low in iron (v common in toddlers not sure at 4). With ds it was vit d deficiency - he's perked up no end now :)

Not ill and she takes a vitamin supplement with rda of D daily. I noticed first after holiday where there was lots of swimming and later bedtime but that's 5 weeks ago now

Could she have hayfever? That makes you feel very tired and miserable and like a pile of poo really! I'm just wondering if the eye rubbing is actually because they itch and feel irratated which also can be mistaken for feeling tired - my DS 7 still can't tell the difference and he's suffered allergies for years!

youarekidding · 19/07/2012 19:57

Also what made me think hayfever is you said she feels like it when out and about - obviously that's when she's being exposed to pollen!

Desiderata · 19/07/2012 20:00

It may be a Vitamin D deficiency. We've had an appalling summer, and since Britons need to store their D during the summer months to get them through the winter, it's not surprising that children and adults are feeling tired right now.

Several friends of mine have had to have intravenous Vit D recently.

When the sun does come out, don't go too heavy on the sun block and the sun hats, etc.

If you do take her to the doctor, bring up the question of Vitamin D. They can give supplements. To be honest, I think we'll all need them before too long.

littlebluechair · 19/07/2012 20:03

They will not think you are a hypochondriac - or they should not if they are worth their wages. As my very good doctor said to me - some parents worry a bit too much, but they are preferable to the ones who worry a bit less than is necessary.

It is very very very unlikely to be a bad thing but you have noticed a change in your child and that should be checked.

Simply say for five weeks she has been excessively tired, sleeping suddenly in the day and not wanting to do her usual activities. I am worried there could be something wrong - please check her over and maybe do bloods to make sure she isn't anaemic or something. Do not quantify or fluff or add extra info - just say that and take it from there.

Ds1 also was on multivit with vit d - it's a tiny amount in them even though it says RDA. Even if it's not vit D, if you want to supplement in winter, you can give far higher amounts safely and to better effect

Hope it clears soon.

Well done you, just proves that sometimes a sense that something is not right is all we have to go on - hope all clears up soon.
