Would you see GP with this? (tiny bit of blood in diarrhoea)

DS is 4.5 and there's been a bug going round his nursery. He has a temp (not excessively high) which is helped by Calpol and he was sick once last night but not since then. He's had diarrhoea a few times and in the last lot there was a tiny streak of bright red blood. Common sense would suggest to me that it must just be a bug as the other kids in his class have had similar and that your bowels are bound to be a bit 'overworked' with diarrhoea so the odd bit of blood is perfectly explainable? But the NHS website and a few other places say that a child needs to see the GP with blood in their stools. Would you take him soemwhere today (he really doesn't seem well enough to go) or just see how he is tomorrow?

No, because it could just be a tiny tear inthe anus that caused it. It's a persistant problem that would make me see GP.

Thanks. I think so too but it's hard to go against medical advice! The bloomin' NHS Direct website says we should go straight to A&E but even a worrywart like me knows that's an over-reaction!

No not unless it was recurrent or there was something else making me worried.

No, I wouldn't. DS once had a terrible stomach bug and there was lots of blood in his stools- the doctor wasn't unduly worried (and it has cleared up in a couple days).

It could be a tiny tear or it could come from intestines, I guess, but as long as it's not lots and it clears up withing a few days I wouldn't go to see a GP.

That's very reassuring, thank you all!

I'm sure I've been told that bright red blood is ok, it's when it's dark that they may be a problem.

I would wait a few days.

What others have said, really - my DD (aged 6 at the time( once said she had a tummy-ache, then passed what looked like pure blood on a day trip out (you can imagine my panic as I drove us home 40 miles). I called the GP the moment I got home and he was reassuring and said it was common in various bugs and to only come in if it continued beyond 24 hours. She passed some more the next day to my dismay :( but then never again, so it does happen, but obviously see how he goes on (as you are doing).

Hope the poor little lad feels better soon!
