Docs given us olive oil drops but we've done those before and they haven't helped, is there really nothing else they can do?!

if she lies on her side, with her head on a towel wrapped (not too) hot water bottle it should help it move.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 13/07/2012 10:22

Thank you, will try that when she has a sleep!

How old is she - old enough for you to try Otex eardrops (available over the counter) - I think they help the wax break up.

You could also try warming the olive oil before you put it in, and put the hot water bottle on immediately afterwards - combine the effects of warm oil and the hottie.

She's 7, the docs said that they can only do olive oil Hmm

My ds is 7 and I am using Earax or something and that helps remove his wax, you can buy it in the supermarkets, have also used Otex and that has worked!

I will have a look thanks. Waiting on a call from docs as the pain relief isn't working at all, prob end up in a+e

we had similar problem recently - try sodium bicarbonate ear drops, available from a pharmacist - around £3. They were recommended to us by DD's audiologist. They actually help to dissolve the wax, not just soften it. They have worked miracles for DD, after months of olive oil not achieving anything we saw results in just a few days!

Amiable · 13/07/2012 12:43

Ps - if she has pain as well definitely spk to GP first - may be something else going on, ie infection.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 13/07/2012 12:46

Went to the gp yest and he just prescribed olive oil/calpol, but she's had calpol and nurofen alternately every 3 hrs and is still in pain.

No appointments today so waiting on a call, if they're no use we shall have to go to a+e

Doc couldn't see any of the ear to see of there's infection yest :(

I'd guess it was an infection as well... I'd get a second opinion, they can give her antibiotic drops - I've had them with a similar problem.

Id also try getting her to soak her ears in the bath with some bubble bath to soften the wax (as long as there is no infection) and then try the olive oil afterwards.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 13/07/2012 12:55

Thanks for all the advise, she's sleeping (sitting up, leaning against me ) not very soundly right now, still whimpering in pain, let's see what the docs say Hmm

Have you tried the ear cleaning sprays? We used ore and then a boots one and it did the job, DD's hearing was restored.

MamaMaiasaura · 13/07/2012 20:36

I'd get dr to swab it as dd had lots of wax and pain (8 months) dr thought I was neurotic but did swab. She had outer ear infection got weeks worth of antibiotic ear drops and all cleared. Unfortunately it looks like its back so another swab and drops again, and if swab clear to stop drops.

Her dad has her this weekend he took my advice and took her too the walk in, she does have an infection, so has antibiotics, thanks for the tips people
