Sore mouth, no voice - any.ideas?

DS (5) has been off school today with no voice, spots on his tongue and a sore mouth. No sign of a temperature, and NHS direct seemed unconcerned. I assumed it was hand, foot and mouth disease or something similar, and he played reasonably happily with DS2 and DS3.

Then at supper when he yelped in pain at a morsel of mashed potato, cried, refused to drink anything, and had an early night. At 10 pm he was crying but incomprehensible (due to no voice), drooling alarmingly, crying "help, Mummy". I finally got him to have some warm milk (is being v stubborn about water which he usually loves), although he spat the Calpol over me!

He's finally asleep in my bed. Anyone know what this could be?

The six month old and two year old are now waking up hourly with awful coughs, and DH is away at a conference. Yay!

I immediately thought hand foot and mouth but maybe not. Sorry not much help but at least a bump for you.

Thanks! Was just wondering if I should be more concerned? Worried his tongue could swell more and it could be dangerous...

But not sure how I would do an a and e trip with all three!

If its worse ring NHS direct again and say you can't get out so need advise. Do you have anyone who could look after the other children?

could be a primary herpes infection

TBH if he's deteriorating, struggling to drink and to get Calpol down, I would ring your out of hours GP.

my ds had horrible throat recently, really hurt to swallow and croaky voice. Dr said was just a virus. It lasted 3/4 days, with one day in middle being particularly bad.

Dr recommended ibuprofen rather than calpol as numbs on the way down, but ds said it stung.

Once I had forced persuaded him to have calpol, after 20 minutes he was able to drink and I made sure he drank. He was ok as long as calpol worked and crying ans miserable as soon as it wore off (and he is 9)

Watch his liquids, if he won't drink you must phone gp.

hope he feels better in the morning

My ds had similar though didn't lose his voice. He had about 50 ulcery spots in his mouth - very white centre with very red outer circle.

The docs said the usual of virus but imo it was either a primary herpes infection or canker sores. Googling both might help you.

Ds got better in 4/5 days and I had to be very strict about drinking. Didn't bother with calpol as it made no difference tbh.

Thanks for all the replies!

After all that, he fell asleep all night, and woke up in such good spirits he wanted to go to school. He drank lots of water and warm milk, and I've let him go.

Still has a sore mouth, but am hoping the excitement of school will distract him, and it'll all heal.

Think I was over-reacting at the appalling possibility of a hospital trip with three little boys - at times like this I wish we had family close by! Thanks again everyone.
