Why is her skin so bad at night?

Hello All

My 20MO DD has eczema and it's not as bad as some cases BUT in the evenings when we get her dressed for bed she goes CRAZY when we put her pj's on. She itches for England and sobs and cries. We use Surecare powder so it can't be that.

She loves being naked and when clothes touch her body she just loses it. Piriton doesn't seem to help anymore. I just don't know what to try and am losing my cool what with us having a screaming session every night at bedtime.

Any ideas what's going on?

How is she when you get her dressed in the morning? If she is ok with wearing clothes then the behaviour may be that she is relating it to bedtime and it is because she knows she is then going to bed. Have you tried putting her to bed with normal day clothes on such as leggings and tshirt?
I prseume all her clothes are washed with the same detergent anyway.

Is it to do with how hot the clothes she is being put in are? I was covered head to toe in eczema as a 3.5 year old and I remember hating the feeling of heat ongoing to bed. The eczema creams used plus changing of clothes for bed plus bedclothes used to send me loopy. Try and keep her skin as cool as possible, and the room as cool as possible where she sleeps. I also had a anti histamine syrup promathysine (sp) did not touch it as far as I could tell.

Another thing are you putting anything like epiderm on her? I smother my two in this and it seems to help, though on very irritated skin this is also an issue s it can make the skin feel hot.

Hope you get a resolution soon it is horrible seeing your child so uncomfortable.

Have you done the seven day steroid cream treatment?

Also I am not great at having anyone touch my skin when it is really irritated.

DUSTMITE ALLERGY?

one of the most common irritants causing eczema.

get anti dustmite bedding asap!

Even though sure care is supposed to be hyper allergenic, it may be that there is some irritant in there if your child is responding so immediately to clothing. Check the ingredients. Optical brighteners can be very irritating to eczema. I used Eco balls for laundry when I discovered my children could not tolerate a single washing powder available at my supermarket. Good luck. Ps I suspected it was the powder because the area protected from the clothing by her nappy was not irritated.

Green one I have bumped an old thread about washing powders for you. There are lots of different experiences on there.

This sounds very similar to my 6yo problem. It is usually in the summertime heat and humidity. He turns rash from head to toe. He starts itching around midnight, and is almost drawing blood by morning. A highly recommended doctor told me it was eczema, but I didn't believe him. By the sounds of this, Eczema might be exactly what it is. But, should i expect this at 6 years old?

If she's not fretful in her cot during daytime naps, dust mites may not be the issue. Is she wearing cotton? I also cut out all tags etc which tended to annoy my DS when in bed. Major trigger for my son was overheating, make sure the room is cool. Very dry air (eg aircon, heaters) was also a problem, you could try a humidifier? Also try the Allergies board, allergy parents have heaps of good ideas!

Grimm, excema can happen at any age. And it's horrible for the patient, so you should follow up the diagnosis you e been given for specific excema treatment, when the symptoms are relieved it's a wonderful thing!

at end of the day being very tired can in itself make her more aware its uncomfortable
if she bathes before bed water temp or whats going into the water may be to blame,if doesnt bathe then could be build up allergens

have you ever tried wet wraps?
when my eldest was little they saved many infections and enabled us all a good nights sleep
