5 month old - constant poos, normal?!

Sorry about the subject but this is starting to worry me but I don't want to take dd to doctors for this and be seen as a crazy panicky mum.

So dd is mix fed, her ff is now more than bf but she has always been mix fed so I don't think this is an issue.

She poos ALL the time. I would say at least 10 - 15 times in 24 hours. She always poos when being fed, whether it's bf or ff. Also many other times throughout the day.

They are (sorry!) quite liquid and mucussy, always have been. At night it's a real issue in that I do t know if it's the pooing or the hunger that wakes her but they both have to happen once she is awake. And they often mean a complete change of clothes.

She hasn't always been like this. It's like she is back to newborn habits! Has maybe been for the last month.

I am thinking of introducing some simple food just to see if it helps her tummy bind a little more. Maybe porridge or banana? Not sure if that would help though?

She is following her 25th centile line and is otherwise fine.

I would take her to a non-emergency GP appointment or health clinic and get some advice. They may be able to test a stool sample for common viruses and rule out possible causes.

I'm not an expert but I do have a DD of the same age and this is what I would do.

Is she otherwise well, feeding, sleeping, playing as normal? It's unlikely to be illness/virus related if she has not had a gastroestinal illness beforehand, but if it continues it's worth the GP having a look. It may be teething with the mucousy nappies being very frequent or it may be a dietary intolerance, milk maybe?

Thanks for your replies.
She is otherwise fine. Hasn't had any illnesses so far except for normal colds. That's what is making me hesitate with GP.
Hopefully it is teething. She now has a really sore bottom
. She cries every time I go near it. Lots of air and cream today hasn't really helped but hopefully it will calm down. She is costing us a fortune in nappies!
Would a milk intolerance have other symptoms do you think?

I'm not really sure re the milk intolerance, and I think it would have presented as soon as ff was introduced. Can even occur with bm. Personally I would have a word with the HV as if it is an intolerance it will need careful management Smile

Sore bums are awful. I put antiseptic barrier cream an little grandsons chickenpoxy bum and he screamed. Felt so awful, will stick to Vaseline as that is guaranteed painless.

What formula are you using? I only ask as we fed DD on C&G comfort and she literally pooed every few hours & the exact consistensy you describe. All stopped once we changed to C&G follow on milk.

baddyfreckleface · 11/07/2012 06:59

Sneeze - yes, sore bums are awful. She screams as soon as I take her nappy off now. My other dd never had a sore bum so I was lucky there!

Jojo - she is on Hipp Organic. Was Cow and Gate but I tried changing it to see if that was the problem. She did get better for about a week.

Problem with my HV is that I don't have a specific one and they are only nearby every fortnight so the clinic is very busy and it's more a production line of weighing babies.

Hi, this post could have been my daughters month ago.

Just after 5 months she began pooing all of the time, at least 10 a day at most 18. Always at night too. Awful nappy rash too. I was feast feeding so nothing to change. But one day about 3 weeks later I noticed it was less than normal and over the next few days she was ack to once or twice a day.

I have been told by HV that it was probably teething. She was fine in herself, apart from sore bum. I used metanium with lots of nappy off time.

Good luck with it, hope she is sorted out soon.

yesiamanaturalblue · 12/07/2012 22:49

Has she got/had a cold? that makes poo more frequent and mucusy

baddyfreckleface · 15/07/2012 22:07

Charlie - sounds like similar to your dd then as she has gradually improved now.
I started her on baby porridge stuff in the mornings to see if that would help things 'stick together' and either it worked or it was just timed with things settling down. Her bum is much better too.

No teeth yet though. That pleasure is still to come!
