fast pounding heart in 9 yr old?

For a while on & off ds2 has been saying his chest feels funny, he has autism & isnt great at recognising how he is feeling or expalining himself so i just put it down to indigestion/reflux, which he has had since a baby & dose him up with gaviscon.
But he ahs started to say it feels like his heart is really going fast.
He has had a few episodes over this weekend.

Friday night we were sitting watching TV when he went a bit pale & said my heart hurts again! When i put my hand on his chest his heart really was pounding & going very fast.
He was totally relaxed & not exercising so dont know what could of caused it.
Yesturday he told me that his heart "felt funny again" when he woke up & eh felt like going back to sleep but then he felt better.
Tonight we were eating our tea when he said its doing it again! This time it seemed to pass much quicker (within 20 seconds) then said he couldnt eat his tea.
When this happened tonight ds1 said "oh yeh he felt funny on the trampoline, i though he was having a fit but then he said he felt OK" DS1 went on to explain that ds2 had stopped bouncing, said he felt funny & layed on the trampoline holding his chest.
After a little while he felt OK again & got up & started bouncing.

So if I take him to our GP is he going to say its reflux, panic attacks, or do these symptoms sound worrying?
I should add that ds2 has mild cerbral palsy & learning difficulties as a result of being premature.

I don't know much about it but I wouldn't accept being fobbed of with a diagnosis of panic attacks. I would say he needs to be checked out thoroughly asap.

I would go and get him checked

i'm going to have to take him to the GP aren't I, he hates appointments & is going to be very difficult to get anything useful out of but i really cant leave this can I.
Thanks

I don't think there's much point trying to work out what's happening. Just take him to the GP and ask them to do some basic investigations to examine what's going on with his heart. That's the only thing that'll put your mind at rest and anything like this DOES defiantely need checking out.
Ther are all sorts of odd things that go on with them at that age though. My dd2 has a mild congenital heart defect and complained of chest pain periodically last autumn. Mil pointed out her pulse had the odd additional beat too. So I took her full speed back to the cardiologist and found that it was nothing related to her defect. Sort of weird muscle/growing pain seemed the likely diagnosis and the additional beat is 'just one of those things'

Thanks Northernlurker, you are right I cant guess. I know there is no major undiagnosed structural problem as he has had heart scans as a baby.
He had a PDA that was closed medically in SCBU & had chronic lung disease & was on oxygen for several months after coming off the ventilator so ahs had lots of chest x-ray etc.
I guess all his health problems in the past have strangely made me more laid back than i should be.

I think you are right that you can't leave it.

If your DS really hates being there can he come in to be examined then go to someone else in the waiting room while you have the conversation about what GP is going to do?

slacklucy · 09/07/2012 00:00

Thanks Timandra, it is being talked about as mucha s being examined that he hates so think we will both have to take him so he can wait in the waiting room until the doc is ready to see him

go to the gp. they will try and get an ecg reading of the heartbeat while it's happening. if it is, what i think it could be, it's ok. bit scary while it's happening, but nothing too serious.

from what you have described, it does sound like something called supra ventricular tachycardia (svt). i've had it since birth, was born with an extra web of nerves which short circuit now and again and cause fast heart rate. it's starts and stops quite suddenly, and the heart rate goes back to normal, it makes me go pale, feel dizzy etc while it's happening and can last anything from a few seconds to a few hours. as a child, i found it really difficult to describe what was happening, and it also took ages for the gp to catch it in action, i was about 15 when svt was finally diagnosed. there are different types of tachycardia all quite easily managed.

thank you daenerysstormborn (what a name :) ) good to hear it could be something without being naything too serious.
