5 year old DD with very fine hair, thin, breaking hair

Hi,

My 5 year old daughter has always had fine hair (she takes after me unfortunately).

However, recently I've noticed that it had got thinner, with short bits around the front and side of her head, and looks even more straggly than usual. I haven't noticed any dramatic hair loss on brushes etc. I wonder whether it could be due to swimming (she goes once a week), washing her hair every day (we've stopped that) or putting her hair up with hair bobbles every day (have also stopped that) which is pulling her hair? Could they be causing this, or is it more likely to be a vitamin deficiency?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like a vitamin deficiency - unless you are pulling her hair so tight in the hair band (obviously you aren't Smile ) So maybe look into her diet - vitamin D, iron, Vitamin A, all these can affect hair, but since she is only a littlun it will probably be better for you to talk to a nutritionist.
Good luck!

What type of bobble? Unless a very soft one they can cause a lot of damage to delicate hair

My DD is nearly 5 and I have recently noticed the hair round her temples is breaking off. I think this is the clips she is using, she puts them in and takes them out herself so I am making her use hair bands for the time being instead.
Could it be something similar?

Hi. thanks for all your replies.

thinkfast - she uses normal hairbands, with metal on, but I haven't noticed much hair being wrapped in the band. I am m going down to the town later, so will look for the softer type.

DD also fiddles with her hair, like your your daughter, Lexie, she plays with the clips a lot. I have stopped her using hair bands (and clips), and use the alice type bands instead. Is this the type you are making your daughter use too?

viagrafalls, do you think the doctor will be able to do a blood test on her, or she too small?

Another thing I thought of is she had, what I thought was cradle cap, up until a year ago. I never got it checked out, just got rid of it with baby oil. Maybe it was a fungal infection? I can't see anymore of it on her scalp though?

Thanks

Testbunny, yes, my daughter is always wearing clips round that part of her hair, and she is constantly pulling them out and putting them back in again. I think they have actually caused the breakage because the rest of her hair is fine.
So yes she's using Alice bands now instead.

Definitely sounds like it could be the clips causing the damage, I had the same problem.

I found that using Dead Sea Shampoo really gave my hair more volume, it's really thin otherwise. You can get it off amazon.

I never shampoo my dd's hair. My dd1 who is 8 gas quite brittle hair. We condition it a few times a week and she keeps the conditioner on for about 10 minutes. Perhaps try a few different ones. We have got a rubbish one at the moment and her hair is awful.
