Impetigo - how much cleaning and laundry do I have to do?

DS has impetigo. It's mainly on his face with the odd spot on his arms and legs. I've caught it before it got too crusty and horrible, and have been prescribed fucidin cream which should hopefully clear it up quickly.
Obviously I don't want the rest of the family to catch it. I've been vaguely told 'it's very contagious' and 'don't share towels', but I'm not sure about the extent of cleaning I need to do to ensure the bacteria doesn't infect us all.

Do I need to...
Wash all his bedding? Just covers or duvet too? What temperature?
Wash soft toys?
Sterilise his beakers?
Milton wipe the entire house?
Anything else?

Also does anyone know how long the bacteria survive when not on a body?

Many thanks! Smile

I had this. It was really, really awful. I had it for a while before I realised what it was so it's good you have caught it early. It re-infected me every time the scabs cracked but if I had the same cream as you - which I probably did - it cleared it up quickly.

I had to disinfect EVERYTHING. It is extremely contagious - I caught it from my DP at the time (not suprising) but he caught it from a colleague at work who had cut himself shaving. Perhaps from a shared keyboard? The doctor seemed to think that was mostly likely.

Everything we touched just seemed to spread it more, then our scabs would crack and we'd get reinfected. It didn't seem to actually go for ages. High washes, disinfect everything, try not to touch each other or ourselves is what we did until the scabs started to heal Confused

I wouldn't take chances with it, it's grim.

Chuck all teddies in a high wash asap, & ideally only let him have a favourite back (one that'll withstand daily hot washing).

Bedding, wash all of it - you can get very cheap, thin duvets from IKEA or Argos which is probably easiest until it's sorted because they wash & dry so quickly. Give him a fresh towel every day & get it in the wash as soon as he's done with it.

Horrid! Ds had it a couple of times, it's no fun at all.

Thanks for the advice. The cream seems to be working - no more new spots, the one crusty area seems to be clearing up and some of the smaller spots have virtually disappeared. No signs of it on the rest of the family yet .

I'll hot wash everything today - is 60 degrees hot enough or do I need to go hotter? My machine does 70, 80 and 90 too. Do you know how long the bacteria survives when not on a body though? There are a few things DS has probably touched which can't be hot washed - how long do I need to 'quarantine' them before anyone else handles them?
