centile drop in height

saladsandwich · 03/07/2012 07:50

ds started off just below the 50th centile at birth but was early and plotted corrected age was on the 75th. over the first year he gradually went up and up and sat just above the 99.6th centile (blue shaded area)

from 13th months hes grown but not much and now sits just above the 50th centile for height, am i right to be worried? his weight as dropped from 91st to 75th centile but im more worried about the height.

i asked the health visitor, she said to get him weighed, the health visitor there wasn't concerned , i asked the dietician and she said its unusual to see a drop in height centiles but because his weight and height are close in centiles not to worry.

i cant help thinking somethings not right he's had no end of medical problems but i dont want to hassle the gp with this, hes at hospital with something else in august so i'll raise it thenbut just6 wanted to see if anyone had any ideas

No ideas, but could his other health issues have had some impact on his growth?

If I was you and was worried, I would go and see the Dr notwithstanding the fact I may have already seen him/her for lots of other issues.

Children tend to grow in spirts, and not follow a smooth line My ds growth is all over the place. He'll have growth spirt and then not seem to grow for months. He's growth will look very spikey compared to the growth charts.

If you are worried go an speak to your gp, but I recon he's normal.

RackandRuin · 03/07/2012 13:57

That's a lot of 'growths' in one sentence, I had there.

cestlavielife · 03/07/2012 15:37

if he ahs other issues too ask fo referal to growth clinic ndocrinology - they will properly measure him and monitor for six months to get aa base line on how much he is growing.
the routine tests they will do include those for coeliac which can affect growth .
but his underlying condition might include short stature - depends what his other issues are and what tests been done...

Yogurtmonster · 03/07/2012 16:18

My ds started at 98 th percentile length and 91 st weight and was about the same at his 1 year check. Nearly 2 now and approx 30 th percentile height and 50 th percentile weight. Everyone else seems to be shooting up and my ds isnt changing much! It didn't occur to me to be worried though, I thought they are just having growth spurts at different times. Should I be worried? No health issues and eats like a horse.

cestlavielife · 03/07/2012 16:22

if continuing to grow along the current centile is not an issue.

my dd literally stoppped growing at age two (was falling further off the charts and ver growing out of clothes) and was diagnosed coeliac age four .

cestlavielife · 03/07/2012 16:22

never growing out of clothes

Yogurtmonster · 03/07/2012 19:03

That's interesting about coeliac actually as my MIL has it. My ds does have an enormous tum but no issues with diarrhoea or anything like that. What were your LO's other symptoms other than not growing?

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 03/07/2012 19:14

My DD stopped growing due to asthma treatment, she was monitored at the endocrine clinic for several years and given options that would help her grow but she decided she was who she was and if that meant being petite then so be it. It was good that she had the option though and that other conditions were ruled out.

cestlavielife · 03/07/2012 22:36

Large tummy flat bottom like malnourished child might be coeliac.
Not growing might be coeliac
Irritable behaviour etc can be sign too
Not always obvious tummy problems

cestlavielife · 03/07/2012 22:37

And if family member has coeliac all the more reason to run the tests.

saladsandwich · 04/07/2012 04:30

hi, thought i'd up date

i've spoken to the GP over the phone and he wants to see him, ds's chart isn't even spikey it resembles a hill... there is a lot of tummy troubles in my family, he's already dairy free which made a huge difference.

he's got immunological problems, and behavioural stuff going on at the moment...just hope its nothing though his weight doesn't bother me it's his height thats got me worried, his feet havent grown for over a year and its that what made me actually look at his red book.

Glad you talked to the Dr. Hope it all gets sorted.

Yogurtmonster · 04/07/2012 12:42

Glad I saw this thread. I think I will go to docs. There is a blood test for gluten intolerance I believe? My MIL never had any tests, she just cut out gluten and symptoms went away.

cestlavielife · 04/07/2012 15:21

yes there is a sensitive blood test looking for anitbodies produced ni reaction to gluten - it is hugely important you do not repeat not cut out gluten until these tests are done and if they come back positive for coeliac stay on gluten until biopsy is done

why? because otherwise you cut gluten and it will show negative and if he is coeliac you wont get any help eg fre gluten free food on prescription!
stay on gluten
get the blood tests done,
stay on gluten til results come thru

cestlavielife · 04/07/2012 15:23

ps coeliac is not just an intolerance it is the body's autoimmune response to gluten by destroying the villi in intestines hereby stopping absorbtion of nutrients
if not coeliac as per blood test then you might want to try cutting gluten as it might be intolerance.
but coeliac is different to an intolerance

Yogurtmonster · 04/07/2012 19:29

Thank you cestlavie, very informative. I have an appointment with the docs now so will see what they say.
