DD (5) woke up yesterday morning complaining of a sore throat it looked a bit red and swollen but she seemed okay in herself and went to school. Was in bed asleep by 6.30 last night (early for her) slept until 7.30am.

Throat looking red and sore today still but she seems okish in herself playing normally but hasn't really eaten anything today as she says it hurts to swallow and her throat feels sharp. Her tonsils are now very very swollen, the left one is so big it is touching the dangly bit in the middle (epiglottis?) so she only has a gap on the right hand side. I can't see any white spots/pustules at all. Her voice has gone very thick and she is wincing when swallowing. I've been giving calpol and calprufen. The thermometer is broken but she does feel warm and looks flushed.

Would you try and get an OOH appt tonight or wait and see how she is in the morning?

Is she drinking ok?

As long as she is drinking I would be tempted to put her to bed as normal and see how she gets on but call OOH if she gets any worse.

AdventuresWithVoles · 23/06/2012 19:32

I would wait until tomorrow. Hope she feels better soon.

What would alarm me would be if she felt quite hot to the touch even after calpol, or if she had trouble breathing. Rest is par for the course with many bugs.

When I was small I had tonsillitis frequently. The doctor told my mum to let me suck a cube of chocolate (for the calories) because I wouldn't eat. It certainly cheered me up! Have you rung the OOHs and asked their advice?

Whatevertheweather · 23/06/2012 19:42

Thank you. I've lost a bit of perspective on illnesses as our baby dd2 died last year so I am prone to panic about dd1 now. Am also 30 wks pg.

We are having to make her drink sirzy but she will have sips when we remind her and she has had an ice lolly. Her breathing seems okay. Bless her.

Its no surprise you are panicking, if in doubt then do see the OOH even if just for peace of mind.

If you can get hold of some difflam spray that made the world of difference to DS when he has had tonisiltis, 15 minutes after is the only time he can be persuaded to drink.

littleshinyone · 23/06/2012 19:47

another vote for difflam...

dikkertjedap · 23/06/2012 19:48

It may help to give ibuprofen (calprofen or other brand), this will help with inflammation and pain. Approx. 30 mins after calprofen pain should be much reduced and you may be able to persuade her to drink. If worried about dehydration then give some dioralyte or other rehydration drinks - you can get it at most large supermarkets, so you may still be able to get it tonight if you are worried.

dikkertjedap · 23/06/2012 19:50

X-post, just seen you have already given calprofen, so about 30 mins later she should be able to drink. If not, I would actually see OOH.

Bluetinkerbell · 23/06/2012 19:51

wtw hope K feels ok soon! Have you phoned NHS Direct for advice?
I took E to doctor yesterday and she has throat infection, doctor just said rest a lot and Calpol and keep hydrated. But then her throat/tonsils aren't as swollen as you describe K's are!

Whatevertheweather · 23/06/2012 20:01

Thank you all. Right have dispatched dp to get some difflam spray. Am too scared to put her to bed so she's lying out on the sofa next to me. Just given her some more calprofen.

Thanks Blue hope E is feeling better. I think there is s throat/ear thing going around.

Thank you all again for the advice. Have used the difflam and given more calprofen. She's now fast asleep in our bed. Will see how she goes in the morning, if her throat is still as swollen or if there's white spots will take her to doctors.

She's so rarely ill thank goodness, it worries me so much.

Well after a long night her throat has swollen even more poor thing so OOH at 11am for us! Suspect it's viral as no White spots but there is hardly any gap at the back of her throat now Sad

Based on personal experience, I would take her to A&E rather than OOH so she can be seen by a paediatrician.

Whatevertheweather · 24/06/2012 14:25

Back from doctors with DD. Seems she has a severe viral throat infection and her tonsils have swollen so much to try and fight it. Temp was 38 and glands v swollen too. (3 hrs after calprofen)

3 doctors came to look at them to umm and aah about whether to send us to hospital as they are so swollen but concluded that there's not much that can be done to bring them down as its viral and sent us home with instructions to go straight in if they swell any more or if she's having trouble breathing. So I'm on tonsil watch for the rest of the day!!
