Advice please...39.2 temp/shivering and hallucinating nearly 3 year old?

Quick background; We live rural 40 mins to a and e and out of hours, past experience with ooh and NHS direct is the process is always a few hours with various calls to and waiting for them to call you back...but my son woke 20 mins ago screaming with hallucinations and has high temp/shivering etc we have stripped him of, given him the last 5mls of calpol in the house and he is calmly lying in spare bed with DH....I've also phone my mum...my mum and husband (always go for very calm almost annoyingly too laid back) and tonight say wait till the morning bla bla, I (probably always react rather than respond) feel like I should go now to a and e as in 4 hours its much later and his temp will spike again and we have no calpol left and he looks and is sick, I can hear it his throat but would love some objective opinions...Right now we have agreed to wait 10 mins to retake the temp?...

Wwyd? would love some advice, do you think at nearer 3 he can wait till the morning or shall I just go?

Do you have any infant ibuprofen?
If so, give him 5 mls of that and see if it helps.
I find it lowers a temp a lot faster than calpol

motherwifeteacheretc · 23/06/2012 00:10

No annoyingly nothing left, the last 5 mls of calpol and I gave him some tyxilix we found at the back of the cupboard....obviously feeling bad I am not stocked up as that would make it calmer for the night....aghhhhh thanks for replying though.....hate feeling like I am over reacting but hate the ridiculously calm approach from DH.....

Do you have any neighbours/friends you could borrow some from?
I certainly would not mind being woken up in this kind of situation.

If his temp does not go down, or continues to rise, then 999 is an option open to you, but, in the meantime, it sounds as though you are doing the right things.

motherwifeteacheretc · 23/06/2012 00:28

Literally no-one as we are on a farm and our closet nieghbours are older but also away, my friends and family are in the town that the hospital is in, his temp is 39.0, he is not sleepy almost in a strange state, lying quietly but his eyes are darting all over the room and the he points and says in an upset voice "the monster is there" or similar... He is now lying next to me, DH in the spare room, all calm I'm just worried about the temp spiking again, he has a slight cough and horse voice but no other symptoms.....

Given what you've said, I would get him checked out tonight, to be honest with you.
If you call an ambulance, the paramedics may well just come out to you and check him over without needing to take him to hospital.

motherwifeteacheretc · 23/06/2012 00:37

Thanks I will ring the NHS direct number then as they can lead us through it and get an ambulance if needed, thanks again for replying.

That's okay.
It always feels scarier when your child is ill at night.
This link has some guidance which might help www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/treating-high-temperature-children.aspx#close

I hope you have an ok night and that he is better soon x

CuriousMama · 23/06/2012 00:48

I hope he's ok, how scary for you. Agree about the paramedics, better to get him checked.

HappySunflower · 23/06/2012 00:52

By the way, I'm sorry if my posts sounded a little alarmist- that wasn't my intention.
But, I have known many children to have febrile convulsions, so my advice was given based on that that plus your geographical isolation....

Please update us over the weekend if you can, I'll be wondering how your little one is now!

motherwifeteacheretc · 23/06/2012 01:58

Quick update; The doctor is coming out to us in the next hour or so which is v.rare but a great solution...

Not sure if this is the right time to confess but I did just swap my heart p.j's for plain ones...

Will update in the morning how he is

My son was like this and it turned out to be tonsillitis. Hope all is well

eastendywendy · 23/06/2012 06:06

Wow, a home visit - you are honoured!

Hope he's ok, - hope you've managed to get hold of some calpol or ibuprofen too.

motherwifeteacheretc · 23/06/2012 07:35

Eastendy - I know, very grateful for the rareness...

I did say over the phone that I didn't think driving him 40 mins was going to be good as he was scared hallucinating in his own home so the drive would be bad and they listened

So at 3.30 the doc arrived and the short version is he gave antibiotics and a bottle of ibuprofen, his cough has become very croupy and throat very sore so he though throat infection heading to the chest, will keep a close eye today and if temp rises too high again will take him in.

That's good you got a home visit. Get well soon little one x

HappySunflower · 23/06/2012 10:39

Oh, what a good Doctor.
I hope you all managed to get some sleep in the end.

ladyinthelibrary · 23/06/2012 10:43

That sounded like my experience of DD1s (and DGSs) febrile convulsion brought on by high temp. Very scary for you! Hope he is over that worst bit and gets over his infection x

JustFabulous · 23/06/2012 10:47

Hope he is soon better and send DH out for medicine supplies.

motherwifeteacheretc · 23/06/2012 19:16

He seems much better tonight, it was very scary but glad of the lovely doctor.

He has been talking about seeing the monsters saying ' I saw monsters in my bed and the doctor came when it was night time and gave me medicine.' so hopefully he is processing it and tonight will be back to relative calm as we are all exhausted....
