If shes dribbling Id say it could be tonsilitis.

Otherwise probably a non specific bug.

pinkkoala · 22/06/2012 23:00

she says he throat doesnt hurt, i thought it would with that.
doesnt sound like a typical tummy bug do you think.

here we are again, another night of very high temp 39.6, had nurofen before bed but still couldnt get it below 38.3. she keeps saying she is cold.
what is this.

Sounds v much like tonsillitis. My dd2 was like that a few weeks ago, literally dribble was falling out of her mouth. She needed anti-b's.

pinkkoala · 23/06/2012 04:21

would she not have sore throat if tonsilitus, she says her throat is ok.

OP posts:
eastendywendy · 23/06/2012 06:02

When I have tonsiltis it doesn't hurt at its peak because my tonsils are so swollen they're numb.

That said, her temp has come down well with nurofen so that's good. If her temp is as high again today then I'd probably get her checked out. Can you tell if her glands are up?

Sneezecakesmama · 23/06/2012 17:38

Tonsillitis without a sore throat and pain on swallowing would be unusual. You can have a look at the back of the throat quite easily with a torch.

Carry on doing the things you are doing and if she worsens or it lasts more than 3 days see your GP

If she is dribbling then there is a very small chance it could be epiglottis. I think you should first seek medical advice to rule this out (could be NHS direct) rather than attempting to look into her throat yourself. BTW epiglottis is very very rare, so it is unlikely that it is, but if it is it is very serious.

dikkertjedap · 23/06/2012 19:21

Epiglottis, again in all likelihood it won't be this as she will be vaccinated against it.

pinkkoala · 23/06/2012 23:43

she has been the same today, rang ooh docs they said bring her in. did thorough check, looked for rashes, her oxygen was sliitly down and she wasnt taking in as much air in her left lung, temp was 39.5. they gave dose calpol i had already done nurofen.
think viral but are playing it by ear, she may get worse, and can go to 2nd infection.
the calpol has sent her loopy, she seems spaced out and hasnt a clue where she is. i dont normally use it for that reason.
she needs rest, fluid and to be kept cool. hopefully it will get beta, she has school trip monday, but doc told her she may not be well enough.

So has she been referred for an X-ray to rule out pneumonia? I would insist on ruling that out (just listening is often not enough as it comes down to skills of inidividual doctor, most paediatricians insist on x-ray). If it looks like pneumonia they have to come to a view whether it is viral or bacterial or give antibiotics just in case it is bacterial (otherwise they can do bloodtest). What did doctor mean with second infection?
Personally, I would take her to A&E, ideally children's A&E, and have her checked by a paediatrician.

eastendywendy · 24/06/2012 00:45

I agree re pneumonia - she sounds just like ds was when had it.

pinkkoala · 24/06/2012 19:45

another update, today she has been bit brighter, temp still up and down but stays down for longer than last three days. has been up and playing today but as soon as temp goes up she goes downhill, bk to sleeping on the sofa.
she is asleep now but her snoring is almost as noisy as her dads, this has been since thurs nite. whats that all about.

Most illnesses (viral or bacterial) will be at their worst for 3 days, as it takes that long for the body to make antibodies to fight the illness off. What the doc means is that he thinks its viral, but because viruses causes inflammation and weaken the lungs/throat etc then secondary bacterial infections can then take up residence often causing a resurgence of fever and the child getting worse. Most GPs wont order chest xrays early on in an illness unless the child is very unwell, in which case they will refer them to hospital. Children shouldnt be exposed to unecessary radiation. The average 5 year old will have a few dozen respiratory illnesses and irradiating their chest every time is not usually necessary. The Dr is the best person to weigh up all the presenting factors, but parents should also listen to their instincts.

re the snoring. Its usually tonsills and adenoids being swollen with an upper respiratory infection, but not sure here as the dr didnt say. Maybe some swelling without infection is going on as they fights the virus. Its normal for any mucus membrane (nose/throat/airways) to swell with infection causing a snoring noise at rest, if she is also mouthbreathing then this is probably the case. Just look out for worsening symptoms indicating secondary infection, but generally speaking she should be on the mend.

pinkkoala · 26/06/2012 00:14

so here we go today. she has been alot more awake, sat out in the garden, went for a little walk, had a little more to eat but we are up again tonite as she is rambling a load of nonsense, temp been down more than up today.
whats this nonsense talk about and why when she is asleep. i am getting quite concerned again.

Sneezecakesmama · 26/06/2012 13:09

After 3 days she should be on the mend. Hallucinations are common with a high temp. It's the temp and the reason for it that is the worry. As she hasn't really resolved the worrying symptoms I would contact the gp again.
