I think DS who is 6 may have IBS.. He eats a very healthy diet and never snacks between meals yet his tummy is massively bloated and he looks 9 months pregnant! His arms, legs etc are all normal size yet his tummy always looks bloated. His bowel movements have never been good, he goes about every 3-4 days but he has always been like this ever since a baby. He sometimes complains of tummy ache, but it never lasts long. I asked the doctor about this last year and she sent him for blood tests to test for allergies - wheat I think - but it all came back negative. I'm not sure what to do really? Is there medication for IBS? I've thought about cutting things out of his diet but I'm not sure where to start? And how long would I have to cut something out for before I knew it was or wasn't making a difference iykwim. Any advice appreciated please

Hi there, my DD was (mis)diagnosed with IBS earlier this year, with very similar symptoms. Bloated, tummy pains, on/off appetite, lethargy etc.. DH has IBS and the symptoms were very similar, erratic bowel movements etc. she was given medication to ease the pains (in hindsight, the worst medication she could have had).
She did not respond to it and after being referred to a consultant paediatrician for tests (crohns, coeliac etc) was diagnosed with faecal impaction. Correct medication has helped and she is SO much better.
Please see the GP as this is a MUCH more common problem than everyone thinks and can be managed with medication.
