Pains in legs- My 3 year old child keeps getting terrible pains in their legs

My child keeps getting pains in her legs. She is only 3 and for the past year she has complained on and off of terrible pains in her legs. Sometimes she will cry, sob with the pain and other times it will wake her up from her sleep and she will cry continuously. I have been to the doctors but they say it is nothing... I'm not convinced!? Has anyone else experienced this? I feel so helpless as there is nothing I can do. Sometimes I just sit there for hours rubbing her legs until she goes to sleep.

DS2 had this, on and off, for a long time. We just had to do much the same as you. Eventually it wears off - he's now a strapping 20 yo.

The general opinion at the time (about 17 years ago) was it was 'growing pains'.
Apparently, I used to get the same symptoms.

You and your DD have my full sympathy, it really is awful feeling so helpless

We had the same with ds when he was 4 (around a yr ago) and actually videoed one of his episodes to show the gp. We took him the day before our hols (don't ask!..mostly coz it kept slipping my memory and an episode the day before our hols resulted in me seeing the gp).
Gp thought it was one thing, panicked me, told me I was selfish considering taking him on holiday the next day and that I needed referring.

I immediatly took him to our private hospital, he saw a consultant there, was xrayed and within half hr of seeing our original gp and being worried silly we were put at ease. Nothing wrong at all. Growing pains.

Sounds the same.

btw, ds wpuld stop whatever he was doing, be holding his leg in severe pain, crying. Within 5 mins would be fine.

hth. BUT I suggest seeing your gp to get her looked at

DS is just 4 and he complains of painful legs most nights before he goes to sleep, but says they don't hurt at all during the day. I've been giving him a spoonful of multivitamin syrup each night which seems to have a placebo effect and he often falls to sleep after he's had this and I've rubbed them for a bit.

Could it be growing pains? my dc had these on and off throughout her childhood, esp at night. Calpol helped along with raising the effected leg on a pillow. She would have it for a few nights, and then nothing for a while.

AuntieMaggie · 21/06/2012 18:10

could it be cramps? i know a child that suffered with this. making sure he drank plenty of water and had a banana a day helped

Check they are wearing the correct size shoes, encourage them not to kneel at all, or tiptoe too much. Probably growing pains.

Both my daughters suffered from growing pains so sending hugs my youngest is 14 and still gets them shes double jointed so when she grows the bones move about more in the joints hips knees ankles shins when she was younger i used cold compresses which helped x plus my eldest did a lot of fast walking to keep with meand i was told she had shin splits which is somthing any ex miltary person knows about ( as a ex miltary person myself i was shocked so slowed my pace down)

OOH I remember my chilhood well when I suffered from "growing pains". Nothing ever helped me I'm sorry to tell you but I am fine now. Just remember a lot of love and cuddles from my Mum and Dad. Best wishes x
