I have a 4 year little girl who has had a cough since October 2011. I have been to the doctors a number of occasions abdout this n I get the same thing "keep givining her inhalers" but now they seem to not do anything.
As the cough gets worse on a night to the point where we both get an hour or so sleep (or she vomits) I even rang the NHs direct and got an " overreacting mother" response....:l not happy.
I'm at my wits end with this n I've just read that an antihistamine can help sort this out....does any body know if it would, have you had experience with this? (I have tried ringing the doctors for advice but the gp's don't do call backs, bloody recpetionists!) or does any body know how to make the honey n lemon for coughs?!? Or any other advice...thank you in advance! Jo x

You need to ask for a referral and specifically for a chest x ray.

What inhalers are you using and are you using them correctly? (threads on here previously have shown too many are given an inhaler but no instructions on how to use it)

Yeah I'm using a preventor.was one puff twice a day but the gp said up the dose to two puffs twice a day....also she has the blue inhaler with low steroids in n that's 2 puffs as n when needed up to four times a day.all advice from the gp when I went last week

My 4 yo DS has similar - he had a chest x ray yesterday but I do not expect it to find anything. He only has the reliever inhaler but can often cough until sick. About 6 weeks ago a course of anti biotics immediately cleared it up but this time round the results aren't as good.

I do find that a humidifier at night is marvellous at relieving the cough so that he sleeps amazingly well almost as soon as it is switched on whereas he would previously be coughing badly (I am amazed by how well it works considering there is nothing to see Confused ).

I too would be asking for a chest x ray and maybe a course of anti biotics to see if they help.

I have started keeping notes of when things are at their best and worse to see if I can help identify what may help him in the longer term.

Good luck x

That's still very low doses of the inhalers so you may well find she needs more now. (assuming its the 50mg preventor she has)

I would be asking for a second opinion though either to a pediatrician or to the practise asthma nurse as they often know what they are talking about unlike gps
