Hi guys, my 2 year old boy has a faint birthmark in the middle of his back with dark hair growing all over it. Its about 1.5 inch in size and has been there since birth. His father has the same on his wrist and his grandfather has the same on his back, i wouldnt normally worry but there are other issues. My boy is still not talking, not a word! He understands everything i say which is why i dont think its a hearing problem, he also likes to walk on his toes (when not in shoes) . The worrier in me is thinking is this just normal lazy boys with his speech, he has 2 older siblings who talk for him..... or is it neurological?

My DS1 had a hairy patch in a dimple at the top of his bottom cheeks when he was born. They noticed it during a newborn exam and he had it checked out at the time (ultrasound I seem to remember) - they didn't seem too concerned about it as he was fine physically at the time (and still is) and turned out to be just one of those things. The hair fell out but the dimple is still there. Not sure its the same - but if you're worried I'd get it checked out with your GP.

Hi kelly,

We're moving this thread to Children's Health because we think you might get more of a response there.

  1. Have someone have a peek at the mole. They usually don't advise to whip it off 'just in case' in this country, so let an expert have a look to put your mind at ease.
  1. Not speaking. Are you sure? I had (still do) a lot of older siblings who ys alwaspoke for me. My parents genuinely didn't think I could speak for a long time, and even had my hearing tested. I think I probably couldn't get a word in edgeways (its still the same) or had delusions of grandeur ('My spokesperson will answer than one').

Its defo not a mole, it is a patch....... the more i look at it i dont even think there is any discolouration of the skin Its just darker hair. Its the hair which makes the skin look darker. Either way i am getting my GP to look at it, just to be on the safe side. Thank you for the advise though

Ds2 had one of these at the top of his bum/Base of his back. It was quite visible, as he was a skinny child and his trousers kept falling down! He got teased at school about it and got very upset, so we agreed to have it removed.

It took 3 or 4 operations and the final result is by no means perfect and he may choose to have plastic surgery when he's older.
