Wail. Asthmatic daughter starting a wheezy cough. Long awaited night away for me and DH tomorrow. Advice Needed.

I used to be a regular on asthma threads but dd has been better of late and we are more comfortable dealing with her asthma now so I don't post as much.

Anyway she was 6 recently. She had a badish attack end of April I think and was on Pred for 5 days. She has been well since. We saw the Paed in May and he advised keeping her on Singulair and Seretide but was very happy with her in general.

DH and I have never had a night away without the dcs. We are going to a wedding tomorrow 3 hrs drive away and booked a hotel for the night.

First dd2 came down with a chest infection and has been on antibiotics since Wed night and has improved enough to consider leaving her with MIL tomorrow night.

Now dd1 has started coughing. The sort of cough that may lead to something.

I have emergency Pred. Is it too soon to give her a dose without knowing how it is going to go.?

DH gave her 2 puffs of Ventolin but hasn't made much difference.

Parents of asthmatics - In my situation would you go ahead with plans for night away? The dds will be with MIL for the night.

How good is your MIL at dealing with the asthma?

I would hold off with the pred for now, but would increase the ventolin I know with DS 2 puffs does nothing.

What time do you have to leave tomorrow? I would be tempted to take her to OOH in the morning to get checked over just incase she is starting to get the same infection your other daughter has.

Thanks Sirzy. Think I recognise you from the children's asthma thread.

MIL hasn't ever been involved in dealing with dd's asthma. She is very conscientious though and would administer everything as directed.

I'm not sure about her ability to make a call on what to do if dd did have an attack and I don't think I'd like to put her in that position.

Here I am 6 years in and still dithering about what to do.

We aren't leaving til around 2 tomorrow so it gives me time to decide.

I know if I am in any doubt I won't go and that makes me sad. DH and I so need this trip.

DD1's health more important though.

I've put her to bed with a spoon of cough bottle and a spoon of calpol as she has a bit of a sore throat.

All we can do now is wait and see.

Fingers crossed this time tomorrow night I'll be dancing the night away....

Sorry if I'm being dim but could it be hay fever? My daughter has been terrible this week.

suiledonn1 · 15/06/2012 23:53

Thanks for the replies.

She does have hayfever and she has been hving zirtek every day for it. It's so difficult to know if it is a cold/chest infection starting/hayfever etc

She hasn't been coughing much since she went to bed so she might be ok.

The problem with taking in to OOH doc tomorrow is that if there is no infection or audible wheeze they won't do anything but wait and see which inevitably ends up with her in difficulty.
