DD (6yo) possible uti???

Claire2009 · 15/06/2012 16:31

DD (6yo) is unwell, she was awake most of the night with a headache, feeling sick, and tummy ache. She hadn't eaten tea before going to bed but was drinking plenty... I took her to the docs after dropping ds at school and the doc examined her and said it was probably a viral.
I mentioned she wees a LOT (eg, at home, at tesco twice, and at b&q in the space of 45 mins, all normal wees, no pain when weeing and weeing normal amounts) he got her to do a sample and I was told to call back in the afternoon as they would only be 'dip-sticking it' ... 20 mins later they called and said she has blood, protein and glucose in her wee, they think its a uti and have left a prescription of anti-biotics at reception, but they would be sending her urine to lab to check it over thoroughly...

She has trime-something anti-b, 5mls twice a day for 3 days??! That doesn't seem very much.

I have only had cystitis so am wondering what a uti feels like? She says it doesn't hurt when she wees, is weeing normal amounts, but she is shattered, and going hot/cold :(

Any ideas anyone?

It can make you feel awful, fluy like.

My Dds have bever been 'ill' with theirs but wee themselves.

Anytime Ive had one it has given me back ache and the shivers.

Claire2009 · 15/06/2012 16:40

She was shivering earlier, but I thought that was due to her temp rising (gave her some calpol and she stopped shivering after a 10-15mins and fell asleep). Does it not sting when you wee then? I feel useless, poor girly :(

No it doesnt have to hurt. It usually clears up pretty quick once the anti bs are started.

Let her rest and drink. The dr might want a sample after the anti b is finished.

Hope shes better soon Smile

Thanks Cololepew :)

Poor thing. A uti can completely floor you. It's very draining.

I have had several uti's and never had the burning when weeing symptom. I have had the feeling sick, being sick, feeling like I have flu symtoms.

Lemon barley water is good for helping to flush out the system.

Bunbaker · 15/06/2012 16:55

I expect she has three days worth until the lab can identify which strain of bacteria is causing it. Untreated UTIs can have very serious consequences so please make sure your daughter finishes the course. I would ring the GP on Monday to ask about the results because three days worth of antibiotics doesn't sound like very much.

Claire2009 · 15/06/2012 16:59

Thanks Pancakeflipper.

Bunbaker, that was my thoughts, 3 days is not a lot at all, I will be calling Mon to see what the lab says.

Also, the fever only started last night, so how come she has blood, glucose and protein in her wee already?

That is par for the course. DD was diagnosed with bladder reflux after two UTIs in 2 weeks, the second one landing her in hospital. Our GP is very thorough and insisted on further tests after the second one. Untreated UTIs can lead to permanent kidney damage which is why they are always treated with antibiotics. This is one infection where not using antibiotics is not an option.

Pancakeflipper · 15/06/2012 22:34

The fever is a symptom so the infection would have been underway for a few days or even weeks. Therefore the wee has the yucky bits in it already and then the rest of her body starts showing symptoms.

How is she at wiping her bottom? Has to be front to back for girls. Also cotton knickers, wear tights as little as possible, drink fluids regularly.

Some girls/women seem to be prone to them. So keep taking wee samples to be checked until all clear. It may need a change of anti-b's to get rid of the horrible infection.

And kidney infections are very very horrible.

I hope she doing ok. Do use calpol to reduce the pain and fever as it reallyu does hurt. Poor little thing.

MoaningMajestyReignsAgain · 15/06/2012 22:39

I expect the medicine is trimethoprim?

The course is usually 3 days, so don't worry that it seems too short. If the urine sample shows that her infection is not sensitive to trimethoprim the GP will change it to a different antibiotic. They tend to improve very quickly.

If she gets a UTI again they may want to do further tests but as a one off, it sounds totally normal treatment wise. She probably had the infection then started to have a fever with it - DD has one when she was 2/3ish, fever and awful looking urine but no pain.

Claire2009 · 15/06/2012 23:02

Thanks all.

Yes MoaningMajestyReignsAgain it is trimethoprim, it is absoutely vile stuff, smells like aniseed, dd is not enjoying that one bit.
She is having calpol, nurofen and the antib's, I'm just a little worried that the uti has been there longer than I was aware and damage has been done Confused I suppose I will know for sure by Monday when it has been to the lab.

oh please don't worry, no damage will have been done. That's why your body sends out lots of noticeable symptoms. You can have one for weeks/months and recover to full health. It just can be damn tricky getting rid of an attack. They are very common, very nasty and make you feel utterly grotty.

Claire2009 · 15/06/2012 23:13

Thankyou Pancakeflipper. My sister has kidney trouble, every urine sample has blood in it, her kidneys basically leak blood, and I am worried dd's are doing the same.... all sorts going through my head today!
She has had the weeing regular thing going on since she was 3, she was referred for other things and had allergy/blood tests taken which all came back clear but today was her first ever urine sample.

I can understand your worry, and the fears are going to fly around your mind. It's not likely to be anything more than a uti, but nothing anyone says unless it is a consultant waving x-rays and test results at you, will make you feel confident.

I think as mum I would speak to the GP about your concerns and why you need/want this to be properly checked out.

Claire2009 · 15/06/2012 23:32

I will do Monday, thanks again Pancakeflipper.

How is she today?

Claire2009 · 16/06/2012 22:50

A lot better, thankyou for asking :)
She is not keen on her medicine one bit, getting it in her through bribery mainly, but she's been very cheery today so def better!
