Caring for a grazed scalp

My DS (3) had a tumble this morning, and now has a graze about an inch long and half an inch wide on his scalp, in his hair, plus a few small cuts/ scratches near his hairline which bled profusely.

As soon as it happened I cleaned the whole area with cotton wool and cooled boiled water (luckily I'd just finished a coffee so had some ready!), and persuaded him to sit still until the bleeding stopped, which it did without having to resort to dressings. He appears otherwise unharmed, and has run round like a mad thing, as normal, today, pupils equal and reactive etc. The smaller cuts are starting to form scabs.

However - I'm not sure how to deal with the graze at bathtime tonight. The grazed area isn't yet scabbed over, and I can't wash his hair without touching it/ letting shampoo onto it, so don't want to - but equally I don't want dirty hair over a new graze either!

Are their any doctors/ nurses/ whatever out there who can give me some advice on how best to care for this wound while it heals?

Hair does not get appreciably dirty in a short time except maybe pig farmers, so if it is sore I would leave it. If he is not bothered the extra cleaning will be a good idea.

Thanks Sneeze, just needed a bit of reassurance!

I have never actually watched blood run down his face before, it did freak me, rather....

Forgot I am a nurse. Heads bleed like crazy even tiny wounds. Remember often raking around in hair looking for the tiniest of wounds but blood everywhere!

Yep, that's pretty much how this morning went. He has two small cuts, one long scratch and the 1 inch abrasion in his hair, but seeing so much blood running right down his face I seriously thought we were off to A&E for at least a few stitches.

Thanks again Smile
