hi advice needed please
ds 8 has for the last 4 weeks seems to have begun to suffer with hayfever
itchy red eyes, sneezing and daily nose bleeds-
took him to chemist ,they agreed so we had some antihist, syrup
nose bleeds keep occuring , took him to see nurse last week-she agreed hay fever gave him different syrup- didnt seem bothered about nose bleeds and said they were a symptom of hayfever
today ds comes home from school and says his teacher is writing me a letter as they are very concerned about his daily afternoon nosebleeds-
should i be worried ?is there anything i can do to stop them?
should i keep him home from school?
will be trying to get him gp appoint tomorrow.

Go to your GP. Ours prescribed a nasal spray and a cream - it worked very well.

I think your GP should get his blood tested to rule out anything serious expecially as the school has highlighted this, but anti histimine sprays often do help. Also if possible some vaseline applied right at the top of the inside of his nose. It is dryness and inflammation in this area where there are lots of superficial blood vessels that cause nosebleeds.

dd also had a nasal spray prescribed to help with nose bleeds

Dd1 has had cauterisation a few times to stop nose bleeds. Need to go to your GP for referral to ENT specialist.

saw gp yesterday, who wouldnt give cream/spray for nose as she says this can make things worse.
we have to keep going with daily antihist syrup for a week if theres no change ,he will be refered to ent ,who will probably cauterise.
aftereight- how was that for dd? is it painfull?

A little uncomfortable & unpleasant. The ENT gives her local anaesthetic first & we wait a few minutes & it's over fairly quickly. She's had nose cauterised since she was 5 so she is used to it now! One way round referral is to take your ds to a & e if a particularly bad nose bleed & see if they will refer you to cauterise.

I spent decades having nosebleeds without any particular reason, just a sensitive nose and finally found relief with vaseline. I use it religiously every single night and haven't had a nosebleed for a few years now (used to have up to one a day without even touching my nose - so no provocation!!!).

I was not keen on cauterisation.

Sneezecakesmama · 17/06/2012 10:39

That's 2 votes for the Vaseline (the olduns are the gooduns)

Having seen cauterisation in an adult I would not wish it on anyone and it is a last resort treatment! DD may even need a general anaesthetic as its asking a lot for a child to cope with.

Booboostoo · 17/06/2012 17:06

I was put off cauterisation by seeing it done (repeatedly) to my dad. However, it may be a less intrusive and painful procedure nowadays? I don't know.

We tried topical antibiotics and a humidifier in our sons room and it stopped his daily nosebleeds. Some children seem to be particularly vulnerable to regular nosebleeds.
