Severe nappy rash

I was hoping for some advice about nappy rash. DD is suffering with severe nappy rash.

I tried sudocrem and metanium and stopped using wipes and it just got worse. I showed the health visitor who told me to visit GP. GP diagnosed infected nappy rash and prescribed Fucidin H which I believe is an antibiotic steroid cream.

I've been using this 3 times a day since Monday and while it is better it is still very sore with broken skin. At one point it was almost better. Now it is worse again which makes me think it must be a fungal nappy rash.

Should I take her back to the GP, assuming I can get an appointment, or should I just try canesten? I'm inclined to just try it but I don't know if it could do her any harm if it isn't a fungal rash and I don't know if I can use it with the Fucidin H.

Any advice gratefully received..... I should add I am giving her nappy free time where I can but she is 7mo so between naps, milk feeds and mealtimes there's only so much time available.

If you can't take her to gp, could you take her to a chemist?

I was wondering about that..... Do you think they'd help though? Every time I've seen a pharmacist lately they've directed me to GP because she is so young and then I have the usual problem of waiting for an appointment while DD gets worse.

Mind you, there's no harm is asking is there?

I would try it, if no luck I would play on the fact that the pharmacist has told you that she needs to see a doctor

My HV prescribed caneston for DD when she was a similar age. Is there a weighing clinic or something you could take her to? might be easier than the docs.

I went through this with my own DD when she was tiny, so I feel for you :(

I got no real help for our GPs as my DDs problem turned out to be an intolerance to chemical food additives that I was eating (craved cheap jelly sweets[blush ) & passing to her via breast milk, which was causing her outbreaks of URTICARIA :(

Once I cut that out of MY diet, the problem cleared up quickly, but was helped along with bathing her with bath grade epsom salts & lavender aromatherapy oil, & a muslim bag filled up with oats & squeezed to get the "juice" into her bath - this all helped sooth her sore skin until it healed, kept her out of nappies as much as possible & used metanium as a barrier when we had to go out etc.

Thankfully I've an old friend who works in Alt healthcare & specialises in DCs & babies & it was her who pointed me in the right direction

DD still has an intolerance to food chemical & she's now 9,but so long as we avoid them, her skin is lovely & clear - she will get a flare up in 20 minutes if she eats anything with Azo Dyes or Benzoate preservatives

good luck

Well, the pharmacist was horrible..... Explained the situation and got told 'I certainly won't be prescribing canesten to a child'. It was though I'd requested a line of coke for my baby.... There's a way to deliver a message if you're in a caring profession isn't there?!

Anyway, I phoned Dr and they said they could see us today and they prescribed..... Canesten!!

rockin DD is also BF but I haven't changed what I eat and she has never had it before..... She has just started weaning and has had some nasty nappies so I think that's caused it. I will try lavender and porridge 'juice' to sooth it. Thank you.
