My daughters breath stinks

Dd is 5

Her breath is revolting. It turns my stomach.

She brushes her teeth at least 2 times a day & her teeth are ok (apart from one dead one at front from falling as a toddler) but dentist is happy with it

She is a mouth breather - when she has colds she doesn't sniff snot like i did as a kid, she kinda blows her nose but not fully. The snot sits in her nose it really groses me out

So she's constantly clearing her throat and I think it's that which is making her breath smell. I mean its VILE.

We've encouraged use of mouthwash etc and drinking lots of water.

She's 5 1/2 btw

I'm not the only one to notice it now and I'm worried :(

Any allergies? Could it be post nasal drip?

I suspect it is unlikely to be dental - check adenoids/tonsils etc.

Stomach issues like constipation can also cause rank breath. I would get a check with the GP to rule things out.

happyAvocado · 13/06/2012 19:55

perhaps she suffers from sinusitis

OnlyWantsOneTwoAndThree · 13/06/2012 19:57

Not constipated, she's pretty normal poo wise

Have you had her tested for food allergies? I have a dairy intolerance and it makes me very mucusy. Also, have you checked her throat for tonsil stones? (little whitish yellow lumps embedded into tonsils) they smell pretty yucky and can cause bad breath.

Peggotty · 13/06/2012 20:39

My dd has quite pongy breath too. She doesn't drink much throughout the day and I think that can make breath smell. I noticed an improvement recently when I started making her drink more fluids.

TheGruffalosbitch · 13/06/2012 20:40

Tonsil stones?

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 13/06/2012 20:48

Have you checked her tongue? Does she brush all the days dirt of her tongue as well as teeth? Is it nirmal in colour or furry or anything?

boxoftricks · 13/06/2012 20:55

has she got tonsil stones? Google and see... not v scary
(They aren't actual stones, just where collection of bacteria etc gather in the pits of tonsils)

bumbleymummy · 13/06/2012 21:01

3 suggestions for tonsil stones then! :)

lastboxoftampons · 13/06/2012 21:06

My DS, 3, gets tonsilitis often and it usually causes stinky breath. He doesn't complain of sore throat or anything so it's hard to tell when he has it, but the breath is usually a giveaway.

stmoritzsmells · 13/06/2012 21:06

take dd off the dairy, and cut down on sugar also. If you eat spicy or rich food, cut it out. Raw foods, plenty of fluid like other posters suggested, and the use of a miswak (arabic twig mint flavoured toothbrush)

tonsil stones, intolerances and allergies should def all be checked

OnlyWantsOneTwoAndThree · 13/06/2012 21:46

i think tonsil stones is a possibility, she has spat out stuff before thats stunk and apparently tasted horrid, how do i get rid of them??

She drinks LOTS of water - poor kid

we brush her tongue too

tonsils, poss tonsil stones.

oiwheresthecoffee · 13/06/2012 21:50

Can you look in her throat they should be fairly obvious. I get them sometimes.

LePinot · 13/06/2012 21:52

Oh poor thing - I've had tonsil stones and they are foul :( I had to gargle with corsodyl but I dont recommend that for a young'un.

I'd google it for treatments - but I would say mine was related to a candida problem in my gut, so if she gets bloated or belches alot, that may be an issue also.

oiwheresthecoffee · 13/06/2012 21:54

I used to quite enjoy poking at mine to get them to pop out..I'm weird though.

Halfling · 13/06/2012 21:54

This does sound like tonsil stones. Look inside her mouth, near her throat and tonsils for white/yellowish deposits with a torch.

OnlyWantsOneTwoAndThree · 13/06/2012 21:55

her tonsils are HUGE and she used to get tonsilitus lots when 2/3/4 but not so much in last 18 months - (I suffer lots too from same thing)

Get a torch and have a look. They really do smell horrible too.

oiwheresthecoffee · 13/06/2012 21:58

X post !

OhBuggerandArse · 13/06/2012 22:00

Mouth breathing would do it anyway, stones or not. It does something or other to the balance of the mouth because it gets dried out. Could you nag her incessantly encourage her to stop and see if that makes a difference?

Catsdontcare · 13/06/2012 22:01

Ds suffers from bad breath and it's all connected to his glue ear and adenoid issues. I would ask for a referal to an ent consultant

Catsdontcare · 13/06/2012 22:02

AlsO mouth breathing is very common in children with adenoid problems.
